Chapter 1The afternoon wind brushed against Birchpaw's fur, as he carefully sniffed the air for prey. He abruptly heard the faint scurry of footsteps from far off, but this animal was much larger than usual fresh-kill. Suddenly, the wind flashed through his wet nose, bringing the sickening smell of a ShadowClan cat. Birchpaw looked around wildly, scenting his surroundings for more ShadowClan scent. The chilled leaf-bare air cramped his muscles, but that would not stop him from fighting a rapacious cat. He heard more movement from ahead, and the ShadowClan scent engulfed him. Birchpaw crouched down; ready to pounce on the first thing he saw, when suddenly, a dark-colored she-cat limped towards him from the ShadowClan border.
"Get away! hissed Birchpaw. "This is not your territory!"
"Please..." panted the she-cat. "...Help."The dark cat winced in pain as she collapsed on the forest floor, fighting to keep awake. Finally, she jerked her head and was still. Birchpaw lifted his paw, and nudged her, but she would not move. He carefully bit her scruff, and pulled her through the forest as her helpless body dragged throughout the dirt and leaves. He advanced toward the ThunderClan camp, entered the tunnel, and emerged into the clearing. In the camp, Birchpaw was aware of stares piercing his fur, as confused whispers rippled throughout the watching cats. Ashfur, who had been gaping at Birchpaw in awe, scrambled up to the leader's den to alert Firestar. "Tawnypelt!"cried a voice.Birchpaw whipped around to face Brambleclaw running toward him. "What have you done to her?"shrieked Brambleclaw. "I...I found her in our territory by the ShadowClan border and she-" began Birchpaw, but Firestar's yowl from the Highledge interrupted him. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the Highledge," recited Firestar. Cats began to assemble below the Highledge, and the clearing soon became full of cats. Birchpaw winced as he saw more and more cats glaring at him and Tawnypelt. Leaving the ShadowClan she-cat close by, he padded over to the group of cats, and gave his attention to Firestar. "Birchpaw," Firestar mewed, embarrassed, Birchpaw twitched his tail. "Why have you brought Tawnypelt to ThunderClan?" Birchpaw explained what he had seen, while the clan listened intently. When he finished, his clanmates glanced at each other awkwardly and waited for Firestar to continue. "We should bring her back to her own clan!" shouted Mousefur angrily. "No! Birchpaw said that Tawnypelt was begging for help! It is only right to help a cat in need! Don't you remember when she helped us lead our clans on the great journey?"protested Brambleclaw. "You're only saying that, because Tawnypelt is your sister!"objected Ashfur. "Silence!" yelled Firestar. "Our clan will help bring Tawnypelt back to health. Leafpool, will you take care of her?" Leafpool gave a quick nod, and dragged Tawnypelt to her den. "Why don't we go to the ShadowClan camp to tell them that Tawnypelt is here?"suggested Squirrelflight, who was sitting proudly beside Brambleclaw. "We will do that after Tawnypelt is well enough to guide us there," declared Firestar. "We don't want ShadowClan to be even more hostile with us." "Should we watch the ShadowClan border closely?" asked Ashfur. "Yes, we will watch the border until we are sure that everything is well," replied Firestar. "Brambleclaw, can you arrange that?"Brambleclaw nodded, and Firestar went on, changing the subject. "Tonight is the full moon," Firestar mewed. "Ashfur, Birchpaw, Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw, Berrypaw, and Mousepaw will go to the gathering. Also...," Firestar's words were drowned out as Birchpaw looked over toward the camp entrance. He had actually saved a dying cat! But what if he was too late? What if Tawnypelt died because he hadnt been fast enough?
here is the prologue that has quotes and stuff: (special thanks to Bubbleshine) Prologue A dark gray tomcat padded silently through a lightless black forest. A cold wind rushed through, rustling a few leaves. The tomcat approached a small clearing while a muscular, striped tabby walked up to greet him. "Come," mewed the tabby, while he flicked his tail towards a small den. "Tigerstar! I thought you were dead!" cried the gray tom. "My spirit is still alive, brave warrior," replied Tigerstar coldly. "You killed my mother, you murderer!" hissed the tom. "But the dogs killed her," retorted Tigerstar, "Yes, I did bring the dogs to ThunderClan, but I didn't intend to kill anyone. I really thought that ThunderClan was strong enough to drive out the dogs, but now I know that I was wrong." "Well, I suppose... it could be true," muttered the tom. "You must trust me," mewed Tigerstar, "If you want to protect your clan." "What do you mean?" asked the tom, "How am I to protect my clan?" "You must kill Brambleclaw." replied Tigerstar. "What?" shouted the tom, "Hes not my favorite clanmate, but I wouldnt kill him!" "Brambleclaw is a danger to the clan. He will persuade Firestar to destroy ThunderClan," mewed Tigerstar, "I'm only thinking of the clans safety." "How would I kill him?" asked the gray cat. "I will tell you later," meowed Tigerstar, "For now, you must return to your own dreams."Tigerstar turned toward the cold forest, and walked forwards, leaving the gray tom to fade away.
