Chapter 2  "When are we leaving for the gathering?" asked Birchpaw impatiently.
"About right now," replied Ashfur. "Be patient Birchpaw, Mousefur just needs to get her tail patched up and we'll be on our way."

Suddenly, all at once, cats began to file into the thorn tunnel, and Ashfur nudged Birchpaw, gesturing for him to follow.
The group of cats reached the gathering island as the sun began to set beneath the still, silent lake. Birchpaw padded through the maze of clustered trees and cats, trying to find someone to talk to. Then, a beautiful off-white she-cat started to walk in his direction.
"Hello. I'm Creampaw. I've seen you at the gatherings before. You're...Birchpaw, right?" mewed the friendly she-cat.

"Y-Yeah. I've seen you before too. Umm...so how's RiverClan?" asked Birchpaw nervously.

"We're doing well actually. A couple cats came down with whitecough, but Mothwing was able to nurse them all back to health," Creampaw meowed.

"That's good...I mean that Mothwing nursed them back to health, but not the w-whitecough part...I mean, because-, "stuttered Birchpaw. Creampaw purred with amusement as he stumbled over himself.

"I know, I get what you're saying," she assured. Birchpaw suddenly had the urge to leave, before he embarrassed himself even more.

"You know, they're probably starting the gathering," he mewed.

"You're right, I'd better go," Creampaw walked away, while Birchpaw watched her go with a soft glance. Somehow, he wanted her to come back, so that he could feel the warmth that filled the air when she was near.
Through the whole gathering, Birchpaw gazed at Creampaw dreamily, without listening to any of the leader's conversations. He couldn't take his eyes, or his mind off of the beautiful she-cat, because of an awkward feeling that was churning in his stomach.

"Birchpaw. Birchpaw! BIRCHPAW!!" Birchpaw shook his head, and looked up at Ashfur, who was yelling madly, trying to get Birchpaw's attention.

"Uh, sorry Ashfur. I just can't seem to think straight today. What were you saying?" apologized Birchpaw.

"It's time to leave! We're the last ThunderClan cats here! Come on, let's go," scolded Ashfur.

   "
Oh, sorry. Let's go," mumbled Birchpaw, with his ears folded back and his tail down.
Him and his mentor climbed across the tree bridge, and were the last ones to reach the camp. When they emerged from the tunnel, Whitepaw, one of Birchpaw's denmates, padded up to him excitedly.

"Birchpaw, I'm going to be a warrior! How awesome is that?" she mewed.

   "
Wow, I can't wait until I become a warrior too. Then, we can be denmates again, and warriors together. I am so happy for you, Whitepaw!" Birchpaw replied.

"So what happened at the gathering?" asked Whitepaw.

"Well, nothing much, everything was well in the other clans, nothing really exciting," lied Birchpaw, trying to hide the fact that he hadn't listened at all.

"Nothing really exciting!" exclaimed Berrypaw, who had been listening from a couple fox-tail lengths away. "ShadowClan didn't show up! No one has seen a ShadowClan cat in days! The other clans say that ShadowClan aren't even keeping their boundaries well marked!"

"Birchpaw, why didn't you tell me?" asked Whitepaw angrily.

"I know, he was looking over at RiverClan the whole time. He seemed very dreamy," explained Berrypaw. "Anyways, RiverClan said that they were able to..." Birchpaw slipped away, as Berrypaw told Whitepaw all about the gathering. How could he have missed that ShadowClan wasn't there? He had been so entranced by Creampaw , that he hadn't noticed anything else. Anyways, he had just met Creampaw, she couldn't be anything more than a friend, could she? Birchpaw padded over to the medicine cat den to check on Tawnypelt. Maybe that could take his mind off of Creampaw.

"So how is Tawnypelt doing?" Birchpaw asked Leafpool.
"She'll live,"answered the ThunderClan medicine cat. "It should take her a couple more days, but soon she will be as good as new."Well at least that was good news thought Birchpaw. He gave Leafpool a grateful lick, and walked out towards the apprentice's den for a good night's sleep.

Chapter 3  SPLOOSH!! Birchpaw hit the water. The cold waves thrashed around, throwing him back and forth violently. Instinctively, he unsheathed his claws and kicked with all of his strength against the vicious water. Suddenly, he felt something rough and solid brush his pelt. It was a log! Birchpaw dug his claws deep into the wood, but the waves pulled at him wildly and he lost his grip. Water filled his mouth, choking his throat. He was going to die! He was going to drown!
Suddenly, the scene diminished, and Birchpaw was in the apprentice's den, curled up beside Mousepaw, who was sleeping heavily. It was just a dream, just a dream... Birchpaw repeated the words over and over to himself.  He couldn't believe that it had only been a dream. It had seemed so real. Just as he was settling down, a clan meeting was called.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the Highledge," called a voice that was distinctively Firestar's.
Birchpaw padded out into the clearing, as other cats sleepily walked out from their dens. Birchpaw could see that Whitepaw was already there, her pelt groomed carefully. Whitepaw was sitting proudly beside her mentor, Brackenfur, as Firestar waited from the Highledge for the rest of his clan to meet under the cliff.

"I Firestar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice," Firestar gazed down at Whitepaw with encouragement, as the clan waited silently. "She has trained hard to learn the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in your turn. Whitepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to and protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do," replied Whitepaw, with an apprehensive edge to her voice.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Whitepaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Whitewing. StarClan honors your patience and strength, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan."
Firestar rested his muzzle on Whitewing's head, and Whitewing gave his shoulder a courteous lick.
Birchpaw knew that Whitewing had waited many moons to become a warrior, though she had never complained. She has always done her duties as an apprentice, and never strayed from the warrior code, thought Birchpaw. She does indeed have patience and strength.

Brackenfur was the first to greet Whitewing by her new name.
"Whitewing! Whitewing!" he cheered.
The rest of the clan, including Birchpaw, joined in, swarming around Whitewing and calling out her name. Contentedly, Whitewing let out a whole-hearted purr, as her father Cloudtail, and mother, Brightheart, pushed through the crowd of cats, to be closest to their daughter.

"Leafpool, is Tawnypelt better now?" Birchpaw asked worriedly.
"Oh Birchpaw, she's much better, but not well enough to talk. You seem very worried about her," Leafpool answered, sounding a little annoyed by Birchpaw's constant asking about Tawnypelt.

"Alright, I just wanted to make sure that she was okay," mewed Birchpaw.

"Well, she's fine. Don't worry, if anything happens to her, you'll be the first to know," Leafpool turned toward her herbs, and continued chewing up a cluster of burdock root.
Birchpaw glanced at Tawnypelt, whose flank was rising and falling in a steady rhythm. A sudden nudge on his shoulder made Birchpaw twist around with unease, but it was only Ashfur, flicking his tail impatiently.

"I've been looking for you everywhere!" grumbled Ashfur. "I was going to ask you if you wanted to go on a border patrol with Dustpelt, Squirrelflight, and Whitewing, but at this pace, they'll be gone before you can blink."
"Sorry Ashfur. We can go right now," Birchpaw couldn't help but think that this exact same thing had happened yesterday at the gathering. He was being a mouse-brained kit. Why couldn't he just think straight? Birchpaw padded sulkily toward the den's exit, as Brambleclaw was entering the medicine cat den. Birchpaw looked up at Ashfur, and was surprised to see that he was glaring with envy at Brambleclaw, instead of hurrying on to the patrol.
As Birchpaw and Ashfur caught up with the border patrol by the thorn tunnel, Birchpaw shivered at the thought of Ashfur being jealous of Brambleclaw. Was it because Brambleclaw had been chosen to be deputy? Or was it that Brambleclaw had stolen Squirrelflight from him? Birchpaw raced on to be beside his mentor, as he pushed these uncertain thoughts to the back of his mind.

"How many times do I have to tell you, Dustpelt? WindClan are no threat to us!" Squirrelflight argued, while the rest of the patrol stood out of the way.

"But their border markings are much stronger than usual! Even if Onestar has helped us in the past, he hasn't always been our friend!" Dustpelt disagreed.

"Fine, we'll tell Firestar, but don't blame me, when nothing happens!" Squirrelflight stomped away angrily.

"Better to scare away a mouse, than welcome a badger," mumbled Dustpelt.

"Oh, come on. Let's go check on the ShadowClan border," mewed Whitewing, trying to change the subject, but Dustpelt and Squirrelflight weren't going to make up that easily. Birchpaw was the first to reach the ShadowClan border, almost missing the faint trace of a marking that lingered in the air.

"These markings haven't been fresh for days!" mewed Birchpaw.

"It looks like something happened to the ShadowClan cats," suggested Squirrelflight. "ShadowClan are always refreshing the boundaries."

"Why don't we go back to camp to tell Firestar?" asked Whitewing.

"Good idea," mewed Ashfur. "Me and Birchpaw will go back, the rest of you finish the patrol." Dustpelt nodded and Ashfur took off toward the camp, with Birchpaw trailing close behind.
"Ashfur?" asked Birchpaw nervously. Ashfur nodded, and Birchpaw went on. "Why don't you like Brambleclaw?"
Ashfur's mouth curled into a snarl, but Birchpaw could sense a hint of embarrassment behind Ashfur's anger.

"Who said that I don't like Brambleclaw?" hissed Ashfur. "When we get to camp, go tend to the elder's ticks! Maybe that will teach you to stop nosing around in other cat's fur!"
As they appeared from the camp entrance, Ashfur dashed to the Highledge, while Birchpaw headed toward the elder's den with his shoulders slumped.

Chapter 4  "Birchpaw, I've got a tick right back here where I can't reach it," complained Goldenflower impatiently.
"Okay Goldenflower, I'll get you patched up in just a moment. I'm out of mouse bile, and I have to go get some from Leafpool," mewed Birchpaw, and he padded away toward the medicine cat den.
When he returned, he saw that Ashfur was there, sharing tongues with Longtail.
"Ashfur, I'm almost done. Can we please go hunting after I get Goldenflower's last tick?" asked Birchpaw eagerly.

"Sure Birchpaw," replied Ashfur. "You know what, I'll finish the job. Why don't you go by yourself for once?" Ashfur was being very nice, but Birchpaw was a little suspicious.

"I thought you were mad at me, for asking about something that wasn't my problem," mewed Birchpaw.

"Yes, I was mad at you, because you were nosing around in my fur, but I know that I was too harsh. Go on your own hunting patrol. I give you my permission,"declared Ashfur.
Birchpaw rushed to the den entrance, then hesitated and turned around.
"Thanks Ashfur, you're the best mentor I could ever have," said Birchpaw gratefully.
"You're the best apprentice I could ever have," replied Ashfur. "Now go on hunting."
Birchpaw nodded and padded into the clearing. He ran through the thorn tunnel and forward into the forest, finally halting as he found himself at the edge of the lake. Not even thinking about hunting, he started padding along the water, keeping close to the shore, and was not aware when he crossed into WindClan territory.

"Hey you!" shouted an angry voice. "What are you doing on our land?"

"Sorry I just-" Birchpaw was cut off when a WindClan cat pounced on him unexpectedly.
Birchpaw had no time to think; quickly he dodged the blow, rapidly whipped around and ran with all of his strength. By the size of the tom, Birchpaw could tell that the cat was a full grown warrior, no match for him in a fight. He ran farther and farther, with the tom at his heels. Finally, the WindClan cat ceased, as Birchpaw crossed into RiverClan territory. Oh no, now I'll never get home! thought Birchpaw. I'll have gone around the whole lake to get back! A soft voice from beside him interrupted his thoughts.

"Birchpaw! What are you doing here?"
Birchpaw turned to his left to find Creampaw staring at him in awe.
"Sorry, I was chased by a WindClan cat onto your territory," mewed Birchpaw apologetically.

"What made a WindClan cat chase you here?" asked Creampaw curiously.

Birchpaw was eager to get to camp before anyone started worrying about him.
"Well, it's a long story, and I'd better get back before anyone notices I'm gone."
"Alright," Creampaw meowed. "I'll make sure you make it home okay, but I'd love to hear your story tomorrow."

"The gathering's not tomorrow," mewed Birchpaw, clearly confused.

"Just meet me here in this grove at sunhigh," Creampaw licked Birchpaw's ear gently. "You can remember where this place is, can't you?"

Birchpaw nodded, but he still looked uncertain.

"Don't worry; I'm the only cat that ever comes to this part of the territory. Anyways, we're only listening to stories, right?" the RiverClan she-cat added. She nudged Birchpaw playfully, and Birchpaw gave her shoulder a brisk lick. Creampaw ran ahead to ShadowClan territory, with Birchpaw darting after her. They neared the ThunderClan border, and Birchpaw noticed that there had been no sign of ShadowClan when they had passed through.

"Do you know what happened to ShadowClan?" queried Birchpaw.

"Well, they've kind of gone...missing," mewed Creampaw. "The last time anyone saw a ShadowClan cat was when you brought Tawnypelt to ThunderClan."

"How do you know about that?" Birchpaw licked his shoulder nervously.

"Umm...the gathering?" Creampaw meowed. "Firestar mentioned it, remember?"

Birchpaw flicked his tail with unease. "Oh, yes of course. I remember now," he lied.

The two of them swiftly crossed the ThunderClan border, and said their goodbyes.

"I'll see you tomorrow," mewed Birchpaw.

"Remember," whispered Creampaw. "Sunhigh." She gently stroked his muzzle, and padded away through the swampy forest.

Birchpaw dashed ahead to the camp cheerfully. He felt overwhelmed with emotion after seeing Creampaw. Do I love her? Birchpaw asked himself. No! I can't love her; she's from a different clan! She's only my friend! He shuddered his head crossly, trying to shake away the feeling that he was doing something wrong. Quickly, he advanced into the thorn tunnel, and went straight to the fresh-kill pile. Although he knew that he hadn't caught anything himself, he was extremely hungry. Guiltily, he picked out a small vole from the pile. Ashfur approached him as he was eating the remnants of the vole.

"So, what did you catch on your first hunting patrol alone?" asked Ashfur. Birchpaw almost choked on a piece of meat.

"Well, umm..." Birchpaw began, but he decided he wasn't going to lie entirely this time. "I didn't really catch anything. I guess the prey was hiding today."

"Oh, well maybe you'll get better luck next time," Ashfur meowed encouragingly. Birchpaw was surprised that he wasn't hissed at for being lazy. Something was wrong with Ashfur today.

"I think I'll go check on Tawnypelt," mewed Birchpaw. Anxiously he twitched his ear, and walked toward the medicine cat den. He immediately saw Leafpool coming out of the den, as he was walking in.

"Leafpool," mewed Birchpaw. "Is Tawnypelt better?"
"Oh yes, she can talk now. You can go and share tongues with her right now, if you like." Leafpool's soft mew made it seem as if her voice alone was a soothing medicine.
"Okay, I'll go in now," Birchpaw declared. He padded into the den to find that Tawnypelt was sitting up, grooming herself carefully.

"Hello Tawnypelt. How are you doing?" asked Birchpaw. Tawnypelt looked up.

"Good," she rasped. "I'm still a little tired though." Birchpaw nodded, and she went on. "In ShadowClan, nearly every cat there has a horrible sickness. Even Littlecloud, our medicine cat."
"That must be awful," gasped Birchpaw.

"It is. Firestar is going to send out a patrol tomorrow to go to the ShadowClan camp and help out." Tawnypelt's voice was scarred with sickness. Tentatively, she added, "I heard that you saved me."
"Well, I only brought you here. It was nothing, really," said Birchpaw modestly.
"Thank you Birchpaw." Tawnypelt lowered her head to the ground and delicately closed her eyes. Birchpaw gave her ear a gentle lick, and walked out into the clearing.
