RE: Warriors: Temptation

Ch5 continued...
After a while, Birchpaw completed his assessment, and Ashfur led the way back to camp. When they appeared into the sandy clearing, they found a patrol of eager warriors, including a healthy Tawnypelt, waiting by the thorn tunnel. Birchpaw nodded a greeting in Tawnypelt's direction, and in return, she blinked at him gratefully. Soon enough, Birchpaw spotted his best friend among the group.
"Whitewing!" he cried. At the mention of her name, Whitewing pricked up her soft pink ears, and turned around.
"Birchpaw!" Whitewing answered, as she padded over to him and licked his ear gently. "Where in StarClan's name have you been?"
"I went to take my warrior assessment. I might actually become a warrior, like you!" exclaimed Birchpaw, flicking his tail excitedly.
Whitewing frowned for a moment, and then encouraged him dryly. "That's real great," she muttered, with a sarcastic edge to her voice.
Birchpaw felt as if a claw had pierced his heart. Why isn't she happy for me? wondered Birchpaw sulkily. She's a warrior herself! Trying to flatten his fur, he looked up at Whitewing.
"Why d-don't you...want us to be denmates again?" queried Birchpaw in a dissapointed mew. Whitewing looked down at her paws, diliberatley avoiding Birchpaw's gaze.
"Birchpaw, it's not that...it's just that well," she stopped, and cautiously licked her shoulder, as Birchpaw looked at her intently, eager for her to go on. "You're taking your warrior assessment so early, and I was practically an elder when I took it. Either Firestar likes you more, or you're just...simply better than me," Whitewing hid her muzzle in her feathery, white fur, but Birchpaw was quick enough to see a small tear begin to trickle down her whisker.
"Whitewing, I never meant to hurt you. I only...Oh Whitewing, you're not an elder. I was so-" Birchpaw was interrupted by his mentor's call.
"Birchpaw, are you going to sit around and gossip all day?" Ashfur prodded Birchpaw with his paw to make sure that he was listening. "Firestar wants us to go on the patrol to ShadowClan!"
Birchpaw shot Whitewing a sympathetic glance, and padded through the thorn tunnel with the patrol. Tawnypelt led the cats through the bracken-filled forest. The cold air whipping at Birchpaw's fur, he ran ahead fervently, despite a thorn tearing at his foot. As they crossed the ShadowClan border, everyone noticed that the faded ShadowClan scent that had lingered a few days before, had vanished completely. There was not a trace of ShadowClan at all. They moved on, and finally reached the well concealed ShadowClan camp.
They searched the clearing, and every crevice and den, but ShadowClan was nowhere in sight. However, a strong ShadowClan scent filled the camp, as if the clan had left recently. About to give up, Birchpaw gave the camp a last sniff, and began to walk toward the exit.
"Over here!" shouted Cloudtail's voice unexpectedly. "I found something!" Birchpaw and the patrol followed Cloudtail's scent trail to right outside the camp barrier. When Birchpaw smelled the air, he noticed that Cloudtail's scent wasn't the only thing he smelled. Blood! The moment he noticed the faint hint of blood scent in the air, the fowl reek washed over him. Birchpaw wrinkled his nose in disgust, and pushed through the brambles to identify what Cloudtail had found. There, flowing along the forest floor, was a trail of blood. The thick stream of scarlet liquid was staining the soil with death. Birchpaw knew that no cat could survive losing so much blood. He caught a glimpse of Leafpool examining the trail. She straightened up, and padded over to Firestar. Birchpaw shifted a bit closer to hear what they were saying.
"Firestar, someone vomited this blood. It contains herbs and acid, meaning that the victim was treated with herbs, and the acid proves that it came from the stomach," reported Leafpool to her father. Firestar glanced at the trail, and twitched his leg uneasily.
"Is it contagious?" he asked. Leafpool shook her head, and Firestar turned to the partol. "We will follow the trail until we find this victim," he announced. Some warriors looked uncomfortable, but they nodded in agreement.
"What if the trail leads to another clan's territory?" asked Dustpelt, as he anxiously flexed his claws. Firestar closed his eyes, and lifted his head thoughtfully.
"We will decide when that happens. For now, we will worry about finding this sufferer," replied Firestar. He looked over his patrol, and seeing that there were no more questions, he swished his tail and walked away through the forest, using the trail as his guide. The patrol followed him, and then Birchpaw suddenly noticed that it was almost sunhigh.

Chapter 6  The blood trail was longer than Birchpaw thought it would be. The thick, clumpy liquid soon diminished to a small thread, but it led on. Impatiently, Dustpelt ran ahead of the patrol, eager to see where it lead. Before long, Birchpaw could only see a speck of his father on the horizon. Then suddenly, Dustpelt twisted around, and came dashing back.

"The trail...goes-over-the-RiverClan-border-" panted Dustpelt, barely comprehensible.
"It goes over the border, Firestar," stated Ashfur, while Sandstorm was shaking her head. "What will we do?"
"We will go on to the border, and then decide," affirmed Firestar persistently. He raised his head, signaling his authority, and went on.

"I don't think Firestar knows what to do," Birchpaw heard Spiderleg whisper to Thornclaw. Thornclaw merely nodded his head, and scampered over to his apprentice, Poppypaw.

They all moved faster, eager for Firestar to make his final decision. At last they came to a stop in front of the RiverClan border. Dustpelt opened his mouth to speak, but Sandstorm silenced him with a sway of her tail. Firestar looked over at the RiverClan territory.
"ShadowClan's fate is now in RiverClan's paws," he announced. "We cannot cross their border."
Tawnypelt looked down at her paws sorrowfully, knowing that Firestar was right. Remembering his meeting with Creampaw, Birchpaw quickly got an idea.
"But if RiverClan fail to save ShadowClan, it will be our fault," objected Birchpaw desperately. "If we go to save them, and then fail, we will know that we tried our best." Firestar looked down at Birchpaw skeptically, while other cats were nodding in agreement.

"I see your point..." Firestar looked up at the sky, considering Birchpaw's suggestion.
    "
Why are you all so fond of ShadowClan?" queried Spiderleg, apparently not aware of Tawnypelt's angry glower. "Last time I checked, Blackstar was trying to take away a strip our territory by the ShadowClan border."
"I agree with Spiderleg," mewed Ashfur. "And why did ShadowClan go to RiverClan for help? Don't they know that we're more likely to take them in than RiverClan?"
Birchpaw licked his shoulder uneasily. Ashfur had a point.
    "
Well I believe that we should always care for helpless cats." Leafpool meowed confidently. "No matter how cruel or how far away they are."

    "
Alright, we will go and help them, but if ShadowClan doesn't want our help, we will leave," proclaimed Firestar.

Birchpaw silently gave his thanks to StarClan. Enthusiastically, he darted over the border, as the patrol came after him. The trail had disappeared by now, but ShadowClan's scent was strong. Quietly, Birchpaw slipped away from the patrol, and went to go find Creampaw. As he entered the grove, Birchpaw could immediately smell Creampaw's scent, drawing him further into the forest. All of a sudden, he heard a cry for help echoing beyond the trees. Without thinking, he sprinted through the grove and toward the sound. Finally, he reached a very tiny clearing, where Creampaw was being cornered by a hungry fox. She looked up at him, and her eyes glittered with hope.
"Birchpaw!" she shouted. "I'm so glad you came to save me!"
Birchpaw was captivated. Her soft green gaze, the way she had looked at him, the attractive flick of her tail... Birchpaw stepped closer to Creampaw, unaware that the fox was turning on him. Suddenly Creampaw's promising expression turned to terror.
     "B
irchpaw, watch out!!"

Birchpaw whipped around, to come face-to-face with the fox. Impulsively, he unsheathed his claws. The fox began to circle around him, as if he was determining how to overcome his prey. Birchpaw slowly twisted around, making sure the fox never got out of his sight. Suddenly, the fox pounced. Birchpaw darted out of the way, and whirled around. Giving the fox no time to get up, he leaped in the air, and onto the fox's back. Creampaw joined in; together they ripped off the fox's fur. The fox twisted around violently, trying to shake the two apprentices off his back. Finally, the fox surrendered. He grew limp, and Birchpaw and Creampaw backed off slowly, and then ran off to the grove.
"Wow Creampaw, you were amazing! It was great fighting with you," mewed Birchpaw.
      "
It felt so good to rip apart that mouse-brained fox. I'm glad you were there with me," Creampaw meowed. She went on, changing the subject. "You know, I waited in that grove for a long time. I thought you had forgotten about me. But deep down, I knew you would never abandon meYou're very brave Birchpaw."

Birchpaw's heart fluttered with ecstasy. Now he knew that he did love Creampaw. However, he wasn't sure if Creampaw truly loved him back.
"So, do you want me to tell you my story now?" asked Birchpaw. To his surprise, Creampaw shook her head.
"Birchpaw," she said. "It's getting late. Anyways...I wanted to hear your story because I just like having you around. I'm just eager to have Mothwing look at these scratches."
Birchpaw dipped his head, and walked away toward the RiverClan camp.
"Birchpaw, ThunderClan is this way," Creampaw gestured with her tail towards the border.

     "
Well...there's actually a ThunderClan patrol at the RiverClan camp," explained Birchpaw.
Creampaw's eyes opened wide in surprise.
"So that's how you got here! That's clever, really."
"You see, Tawnypelt said that ShadowClan was sick, so Firestar sent..." Birchpaw explained the story to Creampaw, while they walked to the RiverClan camp. "So I got the idea to slip away and meet you," finished Birchpaw. "That's when I heard you cry for help."
"I lov-" Creampaw started, she hesitated, and softly whispered. "You're a good friend, Birchpaw. You really are."
Birchpaw dashed ahead, not realizing what Creampaw had almost said. Uncomfortably, Creampaw went after him, the tall grass blades crackling behind her. Bird chirping interrupted the forest silence, as the two apprentices bounded through the trees, weaving their way carefully around each obstacle. Finally, they reached the RiverClan camp, and Birchpaw paused before creeping into the entrance. Birchpaw and Creampaw stayed close by each other, although Birchpaw knew that he would be noticed easily with a RiverClan cat at his side. Before Birchpaw could begin to slip back in with the patrol, Ashfur was already eyeing him, and angrily trudging over to Birchpaw with his eyes narrowed into distrustful slits.
"Where have you been?!!" he asked. Birchpaw slunk down into an edgy crouch. "And who is this?!" he gestured toward Creampaw with his nose. "Have you two been up to trouble?"
To Birchpaw's astonish, Creampaw straightened up proudly, and held her head high.
"I'm Creampaw," she mewed tenderly. "I believe that you are Ashfur, Birchpaw's mentor." Ashfur dipped his head. "Birchpaw just saved me from a fox. He's a very well-trained apprentice. He used many unique fighting techniques that are obviously a result of a superior mentor, and born talent."
Ashfur humbly blinked self-assuredly. He flicked his tail, and whirled around to a smooth carved den at the corner of the camp. Creampaw made sure that he was out of earshot, before turning to Birchpaw.
"It works every time," she bluntly meowed, and led him to the medicine cat den, oblivious to Birchpaw's infatuated shuffling over the dusted ground. Her eyes are so beautiful, her fur so soft, her walk so graceful. How can anyone not love her at first sight? Birchpaw marveled. Wait, what am I saying? I can't love her, I can't love her, I can't But however much he repeated the words, the feeling of love never left his confused heart.
