Chapter one
Asta woke that morning to a cool wind blowing across the arctic. She shivered and lifted her head. Spot was awake too. "Hello. Cold morning, isn't it?" he asked. Asta nodded. She looked at Storm. His side rose and fell slowly. She wanted to tak to him. She always felt safe talking to him. She shrugged and stood. Spot followed her out of the shed where they slept. The two were greeted by a harsh wind. "Oh great!" howled Asta, her fur flying. She headed for the house where the master lived. Snow pelted her in the face. She slipped on ice. Asta really didn't like this. She looked back and saw Spot far behin her. His black fur was barely visible through all of the snow.

When Asta finally reached the house, she barked and waited at the door. There was no answer. The lights weren't even on yet. Master was always up by now. Asta stared in confusion at the door. She barked a few more times. The light didn't even turn on! Spot finally reached her side panting. "What's wrong?" he asked. "Master won't come to the door," she barked. Spot started to howl. Asta joined. There was no answer. Asta looked around. There was no one here. There was nothing here. Had master gone? Had he abandoned his beloved team? Asta howled louder, hoping Master would come back. He was nowhere in sight. His scent was stale in the snow. Master was gone!

Asta stared in disbelief at the empty house. She ran around it, trying to find a way inside. Spot followed her. "Hey! We should tell Storm!" he shouted over the howling wind. Asta nodded. Maybe he'll know what to do, she thought. She ran to the shed. Despite the wind and snow, she ran at top speed to the shed. "Storm!" she cried. She skidded to a halt when she got to the shed and squeezed inside. "Storm?" she said. The leader raised his head. "What is it?" he asked. "Master's not here anymore. He's not at the house, and neither are any of his things!" Asta whined. Storm stood and bounded outside where he ran to the house. He barked as loud as he could at the door. There was no answer. He shook his head. "Master!" he howled. "Where are you?!".

The rest of the dogs started to pile out of the shed and make their way up the slope to the house. "Oh no!" cried Snow. Frost began to howl mournfully. "Calm down. All we need to do is find him," Storm reassured, trying to sound calm. Asta hung her head and sighed. "That could take years," she whispered. Storm sagged his shoulders. Spot frowned. Just then, they herad a growl from behind them, from the woods. "The bear!" screamed Asta. "We have to go, now!" Storm howled over the raging snowstorm. The team started to run, but the wind changed direction, and the wind blew in the dog's faces, making it hard for them to see and run fast. The bear hurled himself towards them, roaring.

"Hurry!" Storm howled. Asta could barely hear him. She ran as fast as she could against the wind. The bear roared behind them. Asta looked back. She couldn't see the house anymore. Then, the bear snapped in her face. She had slowed down! She sped up to catch up with the team. Spot looked back at her. "Come on!" he yelled. "Go!" snapped Asta. Spot hurled himself forward. Asta caught up with him. She saw Storm not far ahead. She ran as fast as she could. When it seemed impossible, the wind picked up, slowing the dogs down. "Mush!" barked Storm. Asta knew exactly what to do. The seven dogs got into a line, Storm in front, 3 groups of two behind him. They traveled faster this way. Asta veered in next to Frost. She was panting hard. Asta looked back at the bear. It was just a dark shape in the storm now. They were losing him! "Keep going!" howled Storm. Finally, after a while, the team stopped when they had totally lost the bear. Asta looked around. Nothing was familiar. They were in the woods, everything looked the same. They were lost!

Chapter 2 Asta woke starving. There was nothing she could do. They had spent the night in the forest without food or water, They had stayed right where they had found themselves lost. She stood up and went over to Storm. "Can I go hunt?" she asked. Storm roused. "Do you know how?" he asked. "I could try," replied Asta. Storm pondered for a moment. For a while asta thought that he had fell back asleep. "Don't get hurt, and we won't make any plans without you. Hurry back," he ordered. Asta nodded and headed into the woods. The snow beneath her feet was cold, but the heavy padding sheilded it. Asta sniffed. She scented rabbit. She sniffed around until she found it eating peacefully the berries of a bush.

Asta crouched and flung herself at the rabbit. It writhed under her grip. She growled. With a last bite she swiftly killed it. Happy with herself, she went back to the clearing where the rest of them were. She knew that she could do this again. It was easy! Storm would definitely be happy with the team's first kill, and Asta was proud that she was the one that had gotten it.
