To the End

about the story: well, basically, it's about a war between a certain group of mutants and the humans.

so i got bored the other day and started thinking up a story and came up with this. it's no where near finished - i'm gonna try to keep this one going too. lol

-----------------------------------------------------

Hannah

Step, step, step, breath.
Twen-ty sev-en.

Those two phrases kept running through my head, my metronome for the day. Hey, I had to have something keeping me focused while I ran. Without those two phrases, I'd completely lose myself in the thrill of the race. Twenty-seven, the number of the girl racing in front of me, was steadily getting larger.

I was almost done; I could practically hear my friends calling my name as I pushed myself the final stretch, pulling ahead of the girl that had been ahead of me for most of the race. My eyes searched for one face in the crowd of my friends and family but I couldn't find him. My heart and pace fell, allowing the girl to pass me again and cross the finish line with me not far behind.

Pacing back and forth to warm down, I watched as my friends surrounded me with sympathetic smiles on their faces.

"Why'd you slow down? You were ahead and would have won, Flash. I could feel it from here," the ever so sensitive Fern sighed, punching me in the arm. I stared down at her, wishing she could see, really see, my face. But, of course, being blind she couldn't. Not the way I wanted her to, anyways.

"She was probably started daydreaming about Zach again!" Nine-year-old Austin giggled, bending to touch his toes - only to receive a kick in the rear end once he wrapped his fingers around his muddy shoes.

"We don't mention that traitorous piece of shi-"

"Preston!" Luke and I both snapped, cutting him off. We didn't tolerate that kind of language if we could help it.

"Well, it's true. Both of them," Fern, grunted, slipping her sunglasses back on. I never understood why she wore sunglasses; her eyes looked completely normal. "Ain't it, Flash?"

When I didn't answer, Luke stepped in and placed a hand on my shoulder. "Guys, she probably pushed herself too hard too soon. You've all done it too." Like always something about Luke's serious brown eyes calmed the younger kids down instantly. "Besides," he added, the corners of his mouth tugging upwards hinting at a rare smile, "Hannah will always be our winner, right guys?"

The kids nodded, and the genuine look on Austin's face caused the lump to rise in my throat again. They were all so great to each other, even if they did tease each other constantly over the smallest things. Could really have been only four years ago that we were all thrown together? It felt more like lifetimes.

My family and I moved here when I was ten and, even then, I knew I was a freak. I had never told anyone before, but, get this; I got this amazing green thumb. I can make plants grow with my mind. And then I can make them do whatever I want. It sounds totally crazy, but believe me, it's real. And there are more people out there like me. I only know of five personally, but Doctor Gates - he's a teacher at my school and the only one who really knows what's going on with us - says there are plenty of poor lost souls out there like I was. Like we all were.

Anyways, after I moved here, I spent all my time alone, not bothering to join any kind of group or club. My parents were nice enough to start a little garden for me to take care so I wasn't stuck in the house all day. Then one day, Luke, Mr. Popular himself, came up to me between math and English handing me a note that just said
"Meet me at the park garden after school at 4:30. "

There was a bag of sunflower seeds attached to the bag.

Needless to say, I freaked when I first read it; then I tried to convince myself that I was just being paranoid. Plus I was getting pretty lonely so, of course, at four thirty sharp, there I was, sitting in the grass waiting for him.

At first I thought he wouldn't show up and then there he was, sprinting across the open space towards me. I had listened to dozens of girls gush over how beautiful he was since I had moved here and now that I could see him up close, I didn't really see what was so amazing about him. He looked pretty average to me with his short blonde hair and his average build. But something about his eyes. That's what caught my attention. They weren't any special color like gold but a serious warm brown.

I was still staring when he skidded to a halt in front of me. "You came." That was it. No hello, how are you, just you came.

Fine then, I could be like that too. "So did you." After that we stood there staring at each other, waiting. For what, I don't think either of us knew, really. After a long uncomfortable silence I cleared my throat. "How," I blurted out before I knew what I was doing. "How did you know?"

Luke blinked, surprised. Well, it's better to get straight to the point isn't it? "Well," he started, "I didn't. But Doctor Gates did. He's the one who sent me to find you." That was kinda a bummer. Some old professor wanted me, not Luke.

"Why?" I muttered, only sulking a little. "Because I've got a green thumb? That's nothing special."

"You're selling yourself short, Hannah." Luke smiled down on me; I could feel myself flushing and with my freakishly pale skin, it wasn't very attractive. "From what I've seen and what Professor's told me, you're pretty talented already. But I'm not here to tell you what you already know, of course. I'm here to tell you about a place where you can learn more about your abilities. If you come with me, I can-"

"You can what? Show me how to fit in? Sorry, but I don't think that'll ever happen, no matter how much training I get." I scowled, fighting back tears. Great. Just great. Hear we were in the middle of a garden, a place where I normally felt the most comfortable and relaxed, and I was about to start bawling my eyes out. And Luke knew it.

RE: no title yet. want to help?

.......

He stiffened suddenly and wiped his hands on his shorts. "Look, uhm, Hannah. I really didn't mean to upset you. It's just, uh, since you're new here and all, I kinda just thought maybe you'd like somewhere where you could, you know, be yourself. And even if you don't come, I'll still like you, ya know. Please don't cry - I know it's really hard and all but please just don't cry." Luke's last words came out all jumbled as he tried to comfort me. Blinking back the tears, I stared at him. It was obvious that the serious boy wasn't use to comforting people and that made me laugh.

It started as a little giggle, bubbling up until I doubled over, holding my sides. "I'm sorry," I gasped, "but you're really bad at making people feel better." When I saw his confused expression, I laughed harder. "Sorry, sorry, sorry." I tried to calm myself, taking deep breaths. "Okay, look," I finally managed. "I'll think about it okay? I mean, like you said, I just moved here and all of that... Well, it's still a lot to take in, right?"

His brown eyes locked on my face and he smiled, making me blush again. "I understand completely. And just remember, our offer never expires. You can come whenever you want, kay." When I nodded, he stood. "I've got to head back now. I've been away longer than I thought I would." After a quick hug and a goodbye, I watched him run off in the direction he had come until I couldn't see him any longer.

Looking at Luke now, I could tell how much he - and I for that matter. - had changed in the four years since I moved into the Institution with him.

Luke glanced over and caught me staring. Looking away quickly, I ducked my head, hiding my red face. I couldn't help but grin at his confused expression. That, for sure, was one thing that would never change about Luke: he'd never understand a girl. "Come on guys." I linked arms with Fern who grunted. Not sure if it was disapproval or surprise, I ignored it. "I'm starved; let's get pizza!"
