Stormwarriors Volume 1 (Jaggedpine's Legacy!) Beginning of Ch. 8! Is Winterfang out to kill Gempaw??

Chapter 8

Nightpaw lay down and waited for Waterfoot, his mentor. The tom looked annoyed. "Come on, Stormcat! Let's go!" he hissed, and Nightpaw lurched to his feet. He didn't know if he could hide his excitement. He skidded to a halt in front of Waterfoot. The tom's amber eyes pierced the apprentice. "I'm gonna show you the territory," he sighed, and Nightpaw forced himself to nod slowly. He flicked his tail back and forth. Waterfoot led the way to the camp entrance, and the black apprentice stayed calm, and kept up with his mentor. It was then when he noticed how small the tabby was. He was no bigger then an old apprentice. That made Nightpaw suspicious.
When they were out of the camp, Waterfoot stared at him. "So, you're name is Nightpaw?" he asked slowly, and the apprentice heard the tone in his voice. The edge was gone, and the warrior seemed almost young, like an apprentice. Nightpaw nodded. Waterfoot looked ahead. "Our leader, Leafstar, is a very powerful cat. He wants only the best for us all. He is very strong, and all the clans are afraid of him," he explained. Nightpaw waved his tail in interest.
"Really?" he asked, crouching low.
"Yes," replied Waterfoot. "He declared war on ThunderClan when he found out that one of their cats had been in love with Flightpatch. Plus, when he went to tell ThunderClan what he knew, the cat denied it and accused our leader of something he never did!" snarled Waterfoot, digging his claws into the ground. His eyes were filled with fury. Nightpaw had no idea that a ThunderClan cat would do that!
"That's horrible," murmured Nightpaw. Waterfoot's eyes softened, and he nodded. He started pointing things out to him. Nightpaw loved the RiverClan territory. It was amazing! He sniffed every tree, and soon thought he knew the territory pretty well. Waterfoot seemed impressed.
"Well done," he said to him, when Nightpaw told him where the strongest scent of water vole was. He was very proud of himself too. "You're very skilled, Stormcat. You will serve RiverClan well," he said again, then flicked his tail and bounded off. Nightpaw followed, having no trouble at all keeping up.

After a little while, Nightpaw and Waterfoot came to a river. "This is where advanced swimmers come to practice," he explained, testing the water with his tail. The current pulled it downstream, and he snapped it up. Nightpaw looked at it in amazement. That was the fastest, most ferocious river he had ever seen. He saw the silvery, smooth creatures again, slipping quickly through the water.
That was when he heard a blood curdling scream from upriver. He snapped his head to the sound and saw a golden yellow form in the water, thrashing and screaming. He recognized right before she went under. Gempaw! She was headed toward a dam of jagged rocks! He raced upriver to where she was, and leaped onto a rock. He nearly slipped and fell. He caught the moss with his claws and struggled to hang on. He saw that he couldn't save his sister from where he was. He had to go get her. He lunged out from the rock without thinking, driven by love for family, and suddenly, he had a mouthful of river water. He surfaced and saw Gempaw a few feet away. "Gempaw!" he tried to yell, but his words were gone in a flurry of gurgles. He kicked hard, the thoughts of what had happened the night of the storm fresh in his mind. He lurched for Gempaw, and almost had her when he felt a pair of huge paws with hooked claws land on him, forcing him under. The apprentice got another mouthful of water. He tried to surface, but the paws of the cat wouldn't let him. He was pinned against the floor of the river. He looked up and saw the jagged face of one cat.
Winterfang.

Stormwarriors Volume 1 (Jaggedpine's Legacy!)Beginning of Ch. 9! Winterfang wants the three dead!

Chapter 9
Greenpaw looked cautiously at Tealwhisker, almost knowing that she will be just like the rest of them. Mean. But, she didn't see the hatred in her crystal blue eyes. Gempaw and Nightpaw had already gone with their mentors. It was just her and Tealwhisker. The white she-cat walked over to her, a spring in her step. "Hey there!" she called. She seemed happy and smart. Greenpaw liked her already. She wasn't mean or angry at her.
"Hi!" Greenpaw called back, and the two touched noses.
"I'm so excited! I've never had an apprentice before! But, don't worry about a thing little one. This will work out. Robinstep has told me everything I need to know," he explained. Greenpaw smiled. Tealwhisker waveh her tail at the apprentice, telling her to follow out of the camp. They go bounding along, side-by-side, the white mentor had a shining smiled on her face. That's when she starts to talk about Leafstar.
"I know you've met Leafstar already," she remarked. Greenpaw nodded at her, and runs on. "He's an amazing leader, even though he seems a bit gruff. He's just a very territorial cat. That's a good thing. Other clans barely ever trespass on our territory." Tealwhisker goes on for a while, and Greenpaw finds herself totally caught up in the story, wrapped with the stories about the seemingly amazing leader. She even starts to like him. He's been through so much, and has had to make some hard decisions in the past.
"Did he really do all that?" Greenpaw asked. Tealwhisker nodded at the little yellow and white she-cat. Greenpaw felt like she was really becoming part of the clan. Accepted by every cat. She felt like she was loved and would be looked after, if anyone, by her mentor. She hoped her brother and sister were having this much fortune.

Meanwhile, in the river...
Nightpaw looked up at the face of Winterfang, a broken grin stretched across his face. He could barely make out the words, "It's the end!", come from his mouth. Nightpaw couldn't really hear anything but the sound of water moving around him. He tried to wriggle out of Winterfang's grasp again, but it just knocks his last bit of remaining air that is the thread that holds him from life or death.
It looked like the string had snapped.
Nightpaw almost instantly delved into unconsciousness. But, he suddenly felt the weight of the big warrior come away from him, and the sharp claws that had been digging into his shoulders was lifted off. He scrabbled up to the surface and saw Gempaw on top of a mossy rock, and in the water near him was a big knot of fur, claws, teeth, and water. There was no doubt that Winterfang and Waterfoot were fighting in the river. Waterfoot was bringing the battle to the bank. Nightpaw thrashed and managed to heave himself onto the rock beside his cold, shivering sister. Nightpaw shook his freezing fur.
"Gempaw? Are you okay?" he asked desperately to his sister, who looked sick now as she saw the blood rushing downriver. She shook her head slowly, and then collapsed onto her brother's strong shoulder. He lay his chin on the top of her head. "It'll be okay," he promised.

Greenpaw was panting hard. She and Tealwhisker ad been running for a while, and Greenpaw had learned a lot about her new clan.
Tealwhisker had decided to show her where the stronger apprentices practiced swimming. As they got closer, Greenpaw heard thrashing. She looked at her mentor. Tealwhisker must have heard it too, and smiled at Greenpaw.
"It's probably just some spprentices water fighting," she explained. "We'd better hurry! It's always interesting to watch them." The two rocketed to the river, and then Tealwhisker stopped at the edge of the bank, and her eyes filled with horror. Greenpaw stopped at her side and followed where she was looking. She what was making the splashing sound, and it wasn't apprentices. She recognized two warriors, the mentors of her littermates. One was small, Waterfoot, and the other was huge, Winterfang. Blood and claws flashed everywhere. It was a real fight. She saw her brother and sister on a mossy rock. Gempaw was bleeding. All of the sudden, Greenpaw was the most fearful cat in the forest. "Nightpaw! Gempaw!" she screamed, and leaped at them. She felt teeth fasten in her tail.
"No, Greenpaw!" cried Tealwhisker, her voice muffled by the fur on her tail. The white she-cat heaved her apprentice onto the bank, the fixed her eyes back on the two cats locked in combat. "Waterfoot! Stop! You can't beat him!" she yowled, and launched herself into the river. She knocked Winterfang away, but he slashed her shoulder and blood went pouring into the river and washed away with the current.
"No!" screeched Greenpaw! She stared down at the water in terror as thre cats fought each other, and her littermates stuck on the rock. They couldn't jump off. If they did, they'd be trapped in the paws of fighting cats. She had to act fast or someone was going to get killed. She turned and fled toward the camp.
