Aetius had instinctively stepped out as his brother jumped behind a tree, pulling out both of his long, home-made knives. At that strange explosion of light, sound, and pressure, he had rolled over backwards, for a much longer distance than Joshua, who had been hidden behind a tree. However, he rolled smoothly and darted forward, standing with legs spread apart for balance next to his brother, glaring at the three new humans. Surely they had brought down the explosion, and, as Aetius saw nothing shiny, it did not impress him. Besides, his brother had the best sense for danger, and if he felt threatened enough to pull out his knives, Aetius knew that he should do the same. The two groups stood in a tense silence, waiting, watching.

------------------------------------

Sarah had stood there blinking, staring through the undergrowth for the individuals who they were supposed to find. Her failing search had ended abruptly as what she could only describe as a freak bolt of lightning struck a tree nearby and she was thrown backwards by the shock.

Standing up quickly, two of the individuals had reappeared, and stood facing them with long, crude knives drawn. "Woah, woah," she said, raising her hands in a universal 'peace' gesture - wondering to herself if these children knew what peace was - she took a step back. "We're not here to hurt you." Upon a closer look, the children seemed to be wearing clothes that were modern at least a decade ago, and they were very worn and patched. The children themselves had longer hair, as if they were afraid of cutting it? She blinked, bringing herself back to the present. "We're here to take you somewhere safe, before the Hunters find us."

Joshua didn't move, instead shifting to a lower stance, ready to pounce. Really, what did these people take them for? And how were they supposed to know that these people weren't the Hunters? What were Hunters, anyway?

But he didn't voice his doubts as he watched for the slightest sign of aggression, ready to attack and then hightail it out of there. Joshua, like his brother and anyone with half the mental capacity of a metal  bucket, had assumed that the sudden appearance of these strange humans (something that had never happened in their lifetimes) had triggered that explosion (something that had also never happened in their lifetimes), and made no move to follow them.

-----

Lulubell crouched in her tree several meters away, barely breathing as she kept an eye on the situation, a poisoned arrow on the string of her strung metal bow. She had really meant to go in there and kill everyone before getting back to her beloved ice cream (who knew what the people back at base were doing in her absence?), but the she could use the children's mistrust of the only people who could save them. But the kids were hyper alert--almost on par with the one hundred percent humans' back at base. She would have to be careful. They handled those makeshift knives like they knew how to use them, and them being who they were, she didn't put it past them to be able to get in a few cuts if she wasn't careful.

Sarah had felt the return of her own Gift with that freak lightning bolt, and more at ease now than she had been in a few days, she attempted to explain as quickly as possible. "The Hunters have kept you here, restrained for at least a decade and a half, hiding your powers from you, making them nonexistant, perhaps so they could study you. We're part of the Resistance, rebels, per se," Do they even know what rebels are? "and we'd like to take back our own. Because the Hunters search out Gifteds, those with powers beyond the norm, use them for experiments, and finally, suppress them. So, please, come with us?"

-------------

"Josh, what do you think?" Aetius hissed, both knives held aloft and ready still staring forward. He had not broken his faze to look at his brother,he did not need to. What are these Gifteds, rebels, Resistances, and Hunters? he thought quietly to himself. I've certainly never heard of them before, and we've never seen another human. What's going on here?

Ooc: Lol, sorry for the short on Aetius's part.

Powers? Joshua's face was motionless; it betrayed no emotion even as he considered the woman's words. He wasn't convinced. If she had powers, then her companions wouldn't be looking so... ragged, for lack of a better word. Why did she care what they did, anyway?

Unaware that his stubbornness was going to get them killed, Joshua jerked his head from left to right. "They can't prove a thing," he said in a barely audible voice, eyes not moving from the three standing in front of them.

------

Up until she had moved within earshot, Lulubell had been attempting to read lips--not a very successful endeavor on her part, considering that the one Resistance Gifted who was speaking had her back turned to her, and the brats were about as talkative as a handful of gravel. Thankfully, her earshot was significantly larger than theirs, and the pale-blonde Hunter only had to worry about the younger Gifteds' intuition for danger to call her out. Raising her bow, she effortlessly pulled the string to her ear as she sighted down the shaft at the talkative Resistance agent. She had heard enough. Informing the children of the outside world was most definitely not acceptable, since not only did it mean that they would grow restless and curious, they would also have to find new children to test on.

"Look, I can prove it to you later, but aren't you the least bit curious about the outside world? Haven't you ever wanted to go farther? Can you say you're truly happy here? Just, please, come with us. We need your help to save the rest of the people who weren't as lucky to grow up in a secluded forest," she pleaded, feeling as if someone was watching them. She gazed around, and cursed once again that she didn't have better eyesight.

--------------

"Uh-huh." Aetius had, for one, always been curious about the outside world, but he trusted his brother's intuition far more than his curiosity. Just because he was older did not mean that he ordered the others around. "Should we go with them?" it was barely a hiss, loud enough only for his brother to hear.

Ooc: Lolol just watched a guy on a cart on his belly eating from two ice cream cones at the same time.

Joshua just stared at the woman, hostility growing in his flat gaze. He didn't say anything. There was nothing to say.

"If she can't prove anything now, there's nothing to talk about," Joshua said reasonably to his brother, getting up from his openly hostile crouch. To be honest, Joshua was not all that curious. Life in the forest was happy, and like she said herself (her arguments were full of holes, he noted to himself absently), it was lucky to be in a forest. There was no need to help others--others, he reminded himself, that he wasn't even sure existed. He started to move away, one slow step at a time, making sure he had his footing before he moved again. In case the strange woman attacked, he needed to be ready. Where was their sister?

-----

"Silly children," she chuckled to herself. Her voice was quiet enough that it didn't disturb the bird preening itself not a branch or two away; it didn't move even as she made the final adjustments and then loosed the arrow. The shaft, made of a specially designed metal, its barbed head, as well as the contact poison smeared all over it, was designed to deal as much damage in as a short time period as possible. Already her gloved hands were dancing back to her quiver to grab another arrow while her feet carried her from the branch where she had been resting, already on her way to another perch.

Sarah felt the whistling arrow, merely a disturbance in the air, and she immediately rolled to one side, lightning-quick as the arrow landed harmlessly in the ground nearby. "This is what I'm talking about! they'll know that you know now, the Hunters are here. We need to go! Else they may kill you too!" She was looking backwards for escape routes, wondering if the trees were indeed safe.

-----------

Seeing the arrow had made Aetius take another step back, it glinted softly in the dim haze. "You know, she seems more friendly than an arrow-shooting attacker. It seems like we have no choice but to change, now, brother," he said softly, eyes focused on the arrow. It seemed so pretty.

Joshua still couldn't be sure. "And if it's rivalry between these two groups?" he argued softly, diving behind a tree to hide from their line of sight. "You should know, brother. There is always a choice." Putting one of his knives away, he turned. "We should get back before we're involved even more."

------

By now the woman was shouting rather desperately, and Lulu quirked a smile. Silly woman. They wouldn't need killing if she would keep her mouth shut, but these Rebels were all the same; perched on their glorified high horse, they flaunted their incorrect, half-accurate knowledge and caused the deaths of others through their ignorance. Another arrow started its trip for the rebel before she started moving again, this time closer to her targets, her blowpipe at her lips. Where was her team when she needed them? Good for nothing lugs.

"I guess...but, I feel like she's telling the truth, in some way. I really don't know if we'll ever be able to go back to the way we were, and...I mean, I'll always know that we lost something out there. I mean, I don't know about you, but I've always wanted to go out there and see what there there was..." Aetius didn't understand why he wanted to say this, but he felt it was true. He shrugged, sheathing both of his knives.

------------

Sarah dodged the next arrow just as easily, fortunate that her Gift was agility and speed. "Please, just listen to me!" she cried. "You don't understand what's at stake!"
