Chapter 4

EmberPaw heard LeafPaw get back into the camp. He trotted after her, "Hey, LeafKi- er... LeafPaw. I'm guessing everything went well?"

"Yeah. It was great. Sorry, but I can't tell you anything about it."

"Yeah, I know. Congrats, though."

"Thanks. Good night, EmberPaw."

EmberPaw watched LeafPaw go into the medicine cat's den. He'd have to treat her like clan leader now, because she'd be the one healing him later, when he got all torn up from fighting. He purred at the thought. He liked to think of himself as tough. Cause, truth is, he was tough. He yawned, then trotted to the apprentice den, and he layed down next to SparkPaw and MudPaw. He liked being with MudPaw. She was beautiful, smart, and she was a great fighter and hunter. She had everything he wanted for a mate... But he didn't keep that thought in his head. It wasn't time for him to be picky- not just yet. He noticed that SparkPaw was laying with MayPaw, and EmberPaw wasn't suprised. EmberPaw licked his paw, swiped it over his ear, then he fell asleep.

He woke up the next morning, before all of the others. He stood up, accidently rubbing his leg against MudPaw. He slowly moved his leg away, but it was too late. "EmberPaw, what's going on? Are there intruders," she sleepily questioned.

"No, MudPaw. I accidently hit you with my leg."

"Oh, okay. I was about to wake up, anyway."

EmberPaw hardly belived her. She was sleeping too soundly. She wasn't about to wake up. He purred. "Well, I'm gonna go get a bit of fresh-kill, then I'm gonna ask DarkHeart if I can go on the morning border patrol. Wanna come with me," he offered.

"Sure," MudPaw answered.

Then she stood up, and padded out of the den, and stretched. He followed her, and stretched as well. Sleeping next to all of the other apprentices had given him little cramps. He knew he'd get used to it. And he didn't really mind, as long as MudPaw was next to him. He walked, side by side with MudPaw, to the fresh-kill pile. He watched her pick a squirrel, then he picked a magpie for himself. He put his magpie down for a second, "MudPaw?"

He watched her put down her meal, then she looked at him shyly, "Yes, EmberPaw?"

"Sorry if it's too soon, but... I, uh... I love you, MudPaw."

MudPaw purred, walked over to him, and rubbed her muzzle against his flank. "I love you, too, EmberPaw. It's not too soon, don't worry."

MudPaw cuffed him over the ear with one paw, then she went back and picked up her squirrel. She moved out of his way, basically telling him that he could pick where they ate. He grabbed his fresh-kill and walked with her to the old tree stump on the apprentices side of the clearing. It was the least used spot for eating, and he wanted to talk to MudPaw in secret. Right as they sat down, he noticed that SparkPaw had already waken up, as well as a few of the other apprentices. SparkPaw was with MayPaw- no suprise to him, and CrowPaw was alone. "So, umm, MudPaw," he said, after a mouthful of magpie.

"EmberPaw, can I say something before you continue," MudPaw asked, right as he had swallowed a bit of his meal.

"Sure. Go right ahead."

"Well, now that we know that we both love each other... umm... Then why don't we be," she cut her sentence off.

"Mates? Sure."

"Okay," MudPaw seemed really shy now.

They both finished their meals, then they started sharing tounges. It felt so right for him to be with MudPaw. She looked up at him for a moment, "You said you had something to say to me, right before I cut in. You wanna say it now?"

"Trust me, you said exactly what I was gonna say," he reassured her.

"Okay," she said, though it was almost unaudible, through all of her purring.

He stood up with MudPaw, stretched again, and looked for DarkHeart. EmberKit found him, with EagleFlight. So, love is going around the rest of the camp, huh, he thought to himself. It was the season for mating, though. Green-leaf was the best time of the year for young, and old cats, to fall in love. He trotted, with MudPaw, over to DarkHeart. "Hey, can we go on the morning patrol?"

"Has MudPaw asked her mentor?"

"Her mentor is right there. Hey, EagleFlight, can MudPaw go on morning patrol with me?"

"Yeah. I'm coming, too. It's time to assess her skills," EagleFlight replied.

DarkHeart thought a moment, "EmberPaw, I'm coming too. It's also time for your assessment."

EmberPaw couldn't belive it. It was time he could prove himself as a strong warrior-in-the-making.

Chapter 5

SparkPaw was with MayPaw, next to the medicine cat's den. "So, uhhh... May-,"

"SPARKPAW," He heard ShadePelt yowl.

"Whaaaaaaattt?"

"I TOLD you yesterday that as soon as you woke up you'd be cleaning the SharpFang's bedding! Well, you can do it tomorrow, too!"

SparkPaw bowed his head respectfully at MayPaw, and went into the medicine cat's den for moss. He twitched his tail in annoyance at ShadePelt. "SongPool? LeafPaw? Can I have some moss, please? I gotta clean the SharpFang's bedding..."

LeafPaw came up to him, with some moss in her mouth. She set it down at SparkPaw's paws, then she looked up. "From what I heard just a minute ago, you gotta clean his bedding tomorrow, too."

He picked up the moss in his mouth, and flicked his tail at LeafPaw in annoyance. He padded across the clearing, and set the moss down right outside the den. He went inside, collected the soiled bedding, and pushed it outside by hitting it with his front paws. He moved it out of the clearing, and into the forest. He wasn't going to the shoreline, because he didn't feel like it. So, he just hid the moss in a thorn bush. He padded back into camp, and to SharpFang's den. SparkPaw put the clean moss in SharpFang's den, and spread it out where he was told. "Thank you, SparkPaw. Can you please grab me a rabbit from the fresh-kill pile? I've been dying for a good rabbit, and the other apprentices have been bringing me other food. I'll tell ya a good story as I eat, if ya want."

"I'll get you the rabbit. As a matter of fact, I'll go out and get you a fresh one, but I don't have the time to sit for a story. Maybe some other time."

"Okay. Thank you."

SparkPaw headed out of the camp. He stopped when he heard his mentor calling him. "SparkPaw! Where do you think you're going?"

"I think I'm going to get SharpFang a fresh rabbit, just as I promised him."

"Okay. Just hurry it up."

SparkPaw hissed in frustration as soon as he didn't hear ShadePelt anymore. ShadePelt had been treating him like dirt. He put the problem out of his mind, and he scented the air for rabbit. He didn't catch any traces of rabbit, but he caught a large trace of badger. It had been here only minutes before. Hadn't the patrol caught it? He followed the badger's trail. He caught up to the badger easily, always making sure to stay downwind from it. He decided he'd ambush it, and bring it back to the camp for fresh-kill. The whole clan would be proud of him. He had already caught a falcon before, so a badger couldn't be much harder.

SparkPaw got within range for an attack, aimed at the badger's neck. He was going for a one-hit-kill. He shifted, silently, and sprang. The badger didn't see it coming. He latched himself onto the badger's back, and held himself steady with his claws. The badger couldn't reach him, and it was too slow anyway. He bit down on the badger's neck, and jumped off it. He heard an abrupt thud on the ground as the badger landed. He killed it. He draged it back to camp, and put it in the fresh-kill pile. He headed back out, and also caught a rabbit. He came back, and gave it to SharpFang. "Why do you smell like badger," SharpFang asked.

"I just killed one. It's on the fresh-kill pile."

"Well, now. Back in my days as a warrior, it took a whole patrol to kill a single badger, and the whole clan to kill a swarm of them, plus reinforcements from another clan."

SparkPaw took this praise, and let out a grateful purr. He was glad he killed the badger. He decided that he'd show RainStar. So, he collected the body of the badger, and dragged it to RainStar's den. He put it down, and called out, "Hey, RainStar... I've got a suprise for you."

RainStar came out of her den, and looked at the badger. "Who killed it?"

"I did. All by myself."

"This has to be announced to the clan. Come on. Get your badger, and drag it to the top of the HighBranch."

He did as he was told, and RainStar leaped up after him. Then she called the familliar summons, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather below the HighBranch for a clan meeting."

After the cats gathered, she looked at all of them, and then she started telling them some of the news. "SparkPaw was out of camp, and he killed a badger. I want all patrols to keep an eye out for other badgers, even though this one doesn't have a milk scent. It may still have a family. SparkPaw, please tell them what happened."

SparkPaw told the clan the story, and he noticed that most of the clan were eyeing him as if he was their new leader. "So, then I dragged it back here, and I told RainStar," he finished.

The whole clan started chanting his name, "SparkPaw, SparkPaw!"

He proudly grabbed the badger, and jumped off the HighBranch. He dragged it to the fresh-kill pile, and put it there for any cat who wanted it. Then, he got an idea. He picked up the badger again, and dragged it to MayPaw. "Hey, uhh... MayPaw. I thought you might want to share my badger, for... uhh... dinner," he offered.

"Sure. I've never tasted badger."

They both dragged the badger to the apprentices side of the clearing. By then, SparkPaw was really tired. He twitched his ears as he heard his name. CrowPaw was talking about him. SparkPaw ignored him, and he flexed his claws. He opened the badger, and let MayPaw have the first bite. She looked up at him, and nodded, her eyes gleaming. He also took a bite. The badger tasted great!
