Harleypaw's Fiction:: PUP

Title;PUP
Prologue

The nice summer evening turned into a terrible storm. The pups gathered in a group and huddled for warmth. even the mother was scared. The barn door had been shaking because of the harsh wind. The long tree branches hit against the sides of the barn. All asleep but one pup, who was destined for greatness from the start.
It was in his blood. The scar and mark of his father. As it seemed none of the other pups related him at all. All with pure golden pelts much like their mother. Pup, on the other hand, he had a dark gray pelt, unlike the other pups. None of the pups seemed to mind or even notice, they loved him as their brother.
His mother, on the other hand, never wanted the memory of her long gone mate to ever return to her head, but with a pup with his mark, she couldnt.
She had a name for each of her pups. Each one was happily given a great name, His two sisters were cheerfully named Bif and Jeg. He also had a brother, she gladly named him orch. His mother decided to give him the only name she cared to, she named him Pup.
Pup had no idea he was different, he loved his mother and brother and sisters all the same. He felt he had a happy life.
His brother and sisters acted no differently then they would around any other pup. They didnt even realize he was different, well, they did, but they didnt care.
his mother can still see the day when she was lost in the woods. She met the wolf she would soon depart with. They seemed to get along quite nicely. They didnt want to part, but coming from two different wolds, it had to be done.
Later the wolf found a new mate, and he lived happily ever after with her, never thinking about the golden retriever he had met. He didn't have the siltiest memory, or the siltiest idea about her. Or the one son he had out of his pack.
But soon, they would be reunited. . . . . .

Chapter One

The morning chatter in the barn brought Pup to wake himself up. He glanced at his mother, wide awake.
"Good Morning mother" Pup cooed.
"Pup, go away!" The mother barked.
"Okay mother, see you later!" Pup yelped happily.
Pup noticed Jeg in the distance. He ran towards her as happy as he could be. He tackled her to the ground as soon as she was in his reach.
The two pups were tackling and playing with each-other until they spotted the cat. They ran up to it and sniffed at him.
"Hello cat." Pup said. "What's your name, you smell funny."
"I am Kalob" The cat said.
"Why are you a cat?" Jeg asked.
"Because thats the way I was born." The cat said.
"And why are you . . " Pup began when he heard the shaking sound.
The shaking sound was the sound only animals knew to come to. It was the coo of lunch. The dog and puppy chow is being pored.
"Food!" Jeg barked running towards the barn.
Pup was right behind his sister with a growling belly, and the confidence that he'd get to the bowl before his mother. He thought it would make her proud that he could run so fast. So faster then any pup had ever run, he sped past jeg and was the first at the bowl. His mother was the second one there.
"What are you doing Pup?" The mother barked.
"Eating" Pup said with his mouth full.
"How dare you eat before everyone else you pig!" The mother growled. "No Lunch for you!"
Pup backed away from the bowl while swallowing his mouthful. He pawed his way over to his resting spot and curled up.
"I am sorry mother." He said.
"Shut up!" The mother replied. "Some of your family gets to eat, and want to in peace."

Pup was starting to sleep. He woke himself up. He was hatching an idea.
Maybe if I get Mother a present, she wont be mad at me anymore! He thought. All I need is to get one, but how?
Pup walked up to the cat and sat down. He tilted his head and whined. The cat looked up at him.
"What do Mother's like for presents?" Pup asked The cat.
"My mother always enjoyed a good mouse." Kalob said.
"Would my mother enjoy a good mouse?" Asked Pup.
"I don't know." Kalob said. "Dogs are different then cats".
"I think I should bring my mother a mouse." Pup said. "Then maybe, she'll be happy."
"Listen Pup, I don't think you should . ." Kalob was unfinished and Pup had already run off.
Pup was sniffing out mouse. He had no clue what a mouse sensed of, or looked like, but he sure did want to find one. He thought his mother would love it.
Pup finally got a sent. He followed it until he reached the farmers home. Where he found the creature curled up in a ball right next to the house he attacked the creature thinking that his mother would love the mouse and she'd be happy at him and he'd finally be in his place. He couldn't imagine how happy his mother was going to be.
He paused, half way to the barn. I will finally be in my place. He thought. The place every other pup is at. The place when Mother is happy when they are around. The place where Mother just licks your ears in gratitude. Mother will feel happy at me. And I will be in the right place.
Pup walked into the barn. He set down the mouse and walked up to his mother.
"Mother I have a present for you!" Pup barked.
Pup brought the mouse up to his Mother. He watched her freeze. He thought it was in happiness. But, it was the opposite. His mother became very angry.
"You killed the farmer's pet!" She barked. "You killed the farmer's ferret! Why would you do that Pup?! Your horrible!"
Pup ran out of the barn. He sat next to the cat and sobbed. The cat looked up at Pup once again.
"Mother said the mouse was the farmer's ferret!" Pup sobbed. "Why didn't you tell me?" Pup was sobbing horribly.
The cat had to admit he felt sorry for the pup. And couldn't help but improvise. So he'd curled up next to Pup and hummed a gentle song. Pup soon lied down beside him and slept.
Meanwhile the farmer was walking into the barn. He noticed his Ferret next to the Mother dog. He was furious. He grabbed her by the scruff and pulled her over to the side of the barn. There, was a chained leash that the mother knew was now meant for her. As he hooked it to her red collar she lied down silently. This was all pups fault. She was so angry she could explode.
If only he would have been born normal like the rest of them. She thought. If only that gray pelt was gone. He has no right to be here ruining my life. This isn't his place anymore. Pup has to go. And I am going to make sure he knows it.
The next day pup felt fine and dandy. He saw Orch sleeping. Pup crept up to him and barked. Orch jumped in surprise then, tackled Pup to the ground. They were playing, barking and squirming until the mother walked in.
"Pup! Come here now!" The mother barked.
Pup thought his mother had decided to give him a second chance, that she loved the ferret, and wanted to finally show her gratitude. He thought she would lick his ear happily.
Pups mother smiled at him. Pup smiled back cheerfully. pup lied down next to his mother. And She bit his ear.
"Ow!" Pup yelped. "Let go of my ear! Help! Please let go mother! Help!"
Pup's Mother finally let go. Pup ran toward the cat Yelping in pain and sorrow.
"Cat! My ear! Cat please help! Cat help me! My ear!" Pup Shouted Running up to the cat. The cat was almost scared of the wound he laid his green eyes on. He couldn't speak or move. Pups ear was torn half way through, and was gushing blood like the cat had never seen!
Kalob started his first aid, and soon the pups bleeding had stopped, and his ear nearly began to heal. Kalob was panting and staring at pup.
"Who did that to you?" Kalob asked panting.
"Mother did." Pup said. "But it was only an accident, mother loves me." Pup said sniffling.
"No Pup, I don't think she does anymore." Kalob said.
"Listen you cat!" Pup was now barking with anger. "My mother loves me! And I love her! don't you get it? We love each other! It was only an accident! Right? It was wasn't it? Pup's bark was now a soft whine.
"I don't think it was." Kalob said sadly.
"Your lying! you have to be lying!" Pup ran to behind the barn where he began to cry.
No! He thought. It is not true! I know mother loves me. Mother loves me! Mother loves me! Pup kept repeating it in his head until night fell. Then he felt tired.
"Mother loves me." He whispered. After that, Pup fell into a gentle sleep. His dream began simple, him playing with his brothers and sisters in a fun meadow. Then all of the sudden a dark shadow fell over them. All of his brothers and sisters walked into a group, and every-time he tried to join them they walked away. He then turned around to see the cause of the shadow. It was his mother. Glaring at him. She had her teeth showing and she was growling at him. She bit down hard on his ear and tore it off. Pup was now spiraling down into a tunnel. There, Kalob sat.
"Cat! I found you!" Pup said.
But Kalob shook his head and slowly faded away into the air. Pup was now falling. He was crying for help but no-one could hear him, not even himself. He toppled down the stairs where he met eye to eye with a giant ferret.
The Ferret just reached down and ate him. Pup woke up
Pup was very tired and his ear hurt bad. He walked out from behind the barn and up to Kalob. He sat down and whined.
"My place is here, and Mother does love me." Pup said quietly.
"Okay, I give up!" Kalob said getting up. "I have my opinion and you have yours, but you WILL have to face the truth someday Pup!"
"But cat," Pup began, but Kalob was already walking away. "Cat! Kalob? Kalob! Come back!"
Pup lied down and whined for a few moments. Then, he rolled over and looked at the sky. Clouds were rolling by one by one, a few minutes later they were going bunches by bunches. then, they began getting darker. Pup tilted his head. Then, he got up and peered into the distance. A huge dark storm was on it's way. And Pup didn't know what to do.
So in an attempt to cheer himself up, he chased his tail until he got dizzy and fell over. He picked up the sent of storm. Then began the harsh wind. Pup looked up to see dark storm clouds rolling in.
It began to rain and so Pup ran towards the barn. But the barn door was shut already. Pup tried scratching the door as the wind and rain got worse. Pup was now barking and howling at the door.
Jeg heard him barking at the door and ran towards her mother. She looked up at her with sad puppy dog eyes.
"Mother! You have to help Pup! He 's outside Mother!" Jeg barked.
Soon after she said that, Fid, Orch, and baf were all listening to their brother's cries for help.
"Mother!" Orch said. "Help Pup! You have to help Pup!"
As all of the pups joined in a song of pleading the mother just sat there like a statue.
"Pup is outside mother!" Baf yelped.
"I know he is!" The mother snapped
Pup was running around the barn Yelping and barking as loud as he could. The rain hurt his face as the sharp stabbing drops hit it He Barked so many times, he couldn't bare the pain coming from his throughout. But he had to keep trying.
All of the pups in the barn sat in a corner and watched their mother do nothing to help Pup. A tear rolled down Baf's cheek as she thought about her brother in the rain and cold. She was thinking about how he could die out there. Soon along will all of he other pups realizing what could happen, she yelped in sadness. Now, they were all sobbing. There brother, out there in the cold. Even Pup knew while barking outside, that staying outside without shelter during a storm like this, was almost a death wish.

Chapter Two

Pups furious barks did nothing. He could not see, hear, or even smell anything more then rain. Soon he turned to panic. No shelter, No nothing. The hard rain got worse and worse.
Pup had no choice but to flee to look for shelter. He kept running and running. He tried to do the speed thing he'd done before, but he had to much pain going through his legs and face because of the piercing rain that fell upon him.
He could not feel anything but the rain, he couldn't even find a dry tree to sit under, so he kept running and running and running, he felt like hours had past, he had to think herd how to get some help.
Something came over Pup. He knew how to call for help. Somehow, something was overwhelming him in the new knowledge of what to do, and no other pup could have done it better.
Pup just sat there and put his muzzle in the air. Then, he had no idea how he did it or even why, but he howled. It was the most perfect howl anyone would have ever heard. He howled and howled and howled until he'd felt teeth sink into his scruff and picked him up. Somehow he was being carried towards the forest, and into it. He no longer felt rain on him, but his vision was still very blurry, he had no idea where he was or what was going on.
He knew some sort of animal was carrying him, it felt like a dog, he could not be sure though. in fact, his vision was so blurred from the rain, he couldnt even see more then colors.
He couldnt smell either, he could even fell the stabbing pain from the rain on it after the rain had stopped hitting his body, he now knew he was going to either be safe, or eaten, so he just hoped for the best.
He was set down in a warm dry place, he heard hushed whispers around him, but he didn't make any attempt to figure anything out. He just curled up in a warm ball, and closed his eyes and slept.
He awakened and noticed he was in a barn made of rock. He looked around and noticed big furry dogs. Bigger then the usual ones. He tilted his head at them and then stood up and shook the remaining water from his golden pelt.
"What were you thinking, running away in a storm like that?" A gray dog asked.
"Are you a crazy little pup?" Said a reddish female dog.
"What? No." Pup said. "Who are you strange dogs?"
"Dogs?" The gray one hooted. "What are dogs?"
Pup gasped in horror. There murmurs became serious and very hushed.
"You mean, Your not dogs?!" Pup gasped.
The two strange dog-like creatures shook their head and lied down next to him cheerfully. They exchanged a few short glances and then looked at him.
"You must have run so very far." The gray one said.
"Far?" Pup asked.
You really must have run a long time. Your paws were bleeding when you were first delivered here." the Red one said.
Pups vision was still blurred from the rain, he couldn't see very clearly. So he wanted to take a nap to see how it was afterwards.
"I want to sleep." Pup said.
"Then sleep child." The gray one said.
That was the last thing he'd heard before he fell into a deep sleep.
Another dream had started. His brothers and sisters were saving him. He was, falling off the hey barrel. He was home again! And all of his brothers and sisters were laughing and having fun trying to save him. Then mother appeared at the bottom. She pulled him down by the tail and with a thud on the ground, he woke up.
The curious face on the red creature startled him. He could see clearly now. He saw the Rough red fur with white splotches along the belly and on her muzzle. Her paws were white as well as a stripe on her tail. Soon the Gray one walked up to him. His whole muzzle and down to his stomach were white. As well as the tip of one of his ears.
Soon a pure dark gray one came into his section of the rock barn. He looked at Pup and shook his head and turned away. He took the other creatures with him. Pup was left all alone.
Pup sniffed around his new stone barn.. He found a mouse, witch he ate, not really knowing it was a mouse. He also came across a bug, that he chased around his area.
Another creature walked in, this time, all light grayish looked down at him with her crystal blue eyes.
"Hello there, what's your name?" She asked gentle.
"My name is Pup." He said. "And I need to find my mother, because she loves me."
Wow there! Your name is Pup?" She asked.
"Yes." Pup said.
"How could you be named pup? Are you going to change your name to, what was it?"
"Dog" pup said.
"Are you going to change you name to dog when you grow up?"
"No! My name is just Pup, forever!"
"That would be like a wolf, named wolf, forever" she laughed.
"What's a wolf?" Pup asked kindly.
"Well, you're looking at one right now." She exclaimed.
"You look just like a dog though." Pup barked.
"Or, you, look just like a wolf." She said.
Pup stared curiously at the wolf. Then, he closed his eyes and sighed, When he opened them the wolf was gone, but her smell still lied right beside him.
Pup blinked in surprise, now he could smell lots of wolf's. Every one that had been in that rock barn.
He shook the dust from his pelt and walked.
This is quite a strange barn. He thought. No cows, no cats, and no horses. And sadly, no dogs. His thoughts about the barn kept him from sleeping. He began to think it wasn't a barn at all.
He heard paw-steps coming toward him. He turned around to see the red wolf return. He stepped back. And she stepped forward.
"Alpha wishes to see you" She said.
"Alpha?" Pup said. "Thats a funny name!"
"His name is not Alpha!" She barked.
"Then why did you call him Alpha?!"
"Never mind that Pup, he wishes to see you so come with me!"
"He isn't going to hurt me is he?" Pup yelped.
"Not if he doesn't have to." She said.
Pup gulped and then followed her. Many of the other wolves whispered and watched him go bye. Pup ducked his head and put his tail between his legs. He was scared of all of the commotion, and not to mention he was scared what he was about to do, and who he was about to meet.
They continued walking. Soon the bunches of wolves turned into few minding their business. And they walked on and on.
"This is a lovely barn you have here." Pup said. "But why does it have to be so big?"
The wolf said nothing in return. She folded her ears back in surprise of what she was hearing, though she said nothing.
"Wait here." She said.
She padded farther into the barn. Pup sat down and sniffed the ground trying to distract himself. Than as soon as he got an interesting sent, the wolf returned.
"Alpha will see you now." She said.
"But why is he called Alpha?" Pup asked again.
Not one word came out of her mouth as they continued to walk into the barn. Pup noticed his paws hurt. He wanted to lick at his wounded feet badly, but kept trotting on.
They reached a small opening in the rock. Pup leaned his head down and sniffed the ground.
"Is this where you keep the cows?" Pup asked.
Instead of answering his question she pushed him through the opening with her muzzle. Pup looked back furiously. He whined to be let out, and she guarded the opening and continued not to say a word.
"Turn around foolish pup!" Said the Alpha.
Pup gasped and turned around only to se darkness. Pup sniffed the ground once again, but he smelled the sent of another wolf. He followed the sent all the way to a wall, witch he ran into.
Pup yelped and sat dow, rubbing what he could reach on his head.
"Only the fool runs into bear wall." The Alpha said.
Pup turned around only to see green eyes. He could sniff his sent and yet could not see the rest of him.
"I can only see your eyes." Pup said.
"That is none of the subject!" The Alpha barked.
"What is your name?" Pup asked stepping forward.
"My name is, Stone." The wolf said.
"My name is Pup." He chirped back.
"Do you wish to be in my pack?" He barked.
"What do you . . "
"Do you wish to be in my pack?!" He said roughly.
Pup said nothing, he tilted his head curiously, but said nothing. He took a step forward and sniffed.
"You don't smell like stone." He said.
"Get this pup out of here!" The Alpha yelled.
Almost as soon as he said it, the red wolf returned and nudged him through the opening.
They continued to walk until they got back to where they started. The wolf walked away, and left Pup to lick his wounds.
What is a pack? Pup thought to himself. And what is an Alpha? Not to mention why are they wolves? And why is this barn made out of stone? Pup's mind raced as he tried to answer these questions by himself. He knew it wasn't going to work, but he had to give it a shot.
Pup began to yawn. He had been really tired since the storm, so he closed his eyes and went to sleep.
This time there was no dream, just a deep sleep in witch he wouldn't awake for hours. And he did wake, but not because of something he heard, it was just waking up.
Everything seemed quiet for a while, until the light gray wolf showed up again. She sat next to him and waited for him to say something.
Its all happening so fast. Pup said.
What do you mean? she said gently.
Mother bit my ear, the cat told me she doesnt love me, and now, I am in a barn with you wolves. My life is a puzzle Miss, and it is one that wont be solved
Barn? She asked. This is not a barn you silly! This is a cave!
And now my barn is a cave. He said sadly.
Oh, cheer up. Life is better then you think it is.
How? He said. I almost died in a storm . .
But you didnt. she interrupted. You howled and sent for help, and you got it.
And now I have wounded paws. He added.
They will heal.
My mother is far away, and I wont be able to see her again.
Who says you wont?
Destiny. Pup said.
Well, destiny is a funny thing. She said calmly. It is twisted and unordinary.
I just want my mother back. And Orch, and Jeg, and Bif. Pup sighed.
Who says you wont see them? You know, your the only one holding yourself back from your future.
Whats an Alpha? Pup asked.
The Alpha is the leader of a group of wolves based on strength and more. She said.
And whats a pack?
The pack is the group of wolves.
Should I join your pack? Stone, i mean the Alpha, asked me if I wanted to, do i want to? He asked.
It is up to you. Do you want to train to be a howling hunting pack wolf, or do you want to go back to what you call a barn? She said looking at him.
If I choose the pack, i will leave behind me Kalob, Mother, all of my siblings, and the cows, and horses, and everything i have lived for so far. He said.
I may have only understood half of what you said but, it is all your choice, you can leave the pack when your old enough. You can be a wolf, or a dog, it is your choice.
Why is it so hard to chose? He yowled.
It depends on you. She said softly.
She got up, stretched out her legs, and trotted away. Leaving Pup on his own.
What is your name? He shouted at her.
Cloud. She barked back.
Cloud? He asked himself. shes the only one who has answered any of my questions, and she has led me to the fate of choosing.
He had to chose between wrestling with Jeg, or playing tease ball with Orch, that was much easier, why couldn't he do it now. He couldnt choose let alone think about it without almost hurting himself.
he couldn't bear the silence, so he decided to do what hed done before. He howled a tune, never knowing that wolves were gathering around him just to listen.
His howls contained the sadness of losing someone, and the feelings of triumph, and how it had been though he couldnt tell how it would end, his howls also said things about him and his adventures. He didnt now this, but every wolf that hear his howls, were touched at the story of his life.
His life had been short, but the adventures with his siblings, and the drama with his mother was enough to overwhelm most of the wolves who listened. And they were all wondering, what would become of him.
When Pup was finished, he lied down and groomed himself. Cloud was listening in the shadows, and was now watching him groom himself. She noticed a light gray spot on his paw, and gasped in horror. She blocked the thought in her head from becoming clear, and moved on.
Pup had noticed the spot for the fist time as well. He kept grooming himself until thoughts reached his head. And his thoughts were always nice and clear, as only a puppy, he had no idea to block them.
I should groom myself more often, I might find a bone in here. Sadly, thats all he thought. Even he caught himself thinking so strangely. And he didnt really care.
He did however make up his mind, he would groom himself more often, and not, look for a bone, but if he did find one, he had to admit, hed still eat it, but, hed be a little weirder.
Jeg and Orch ran around the barn yelping and barking for their brother, while Bif sat questioning their mother. She looked at her with sad eyes as to how she didn't help Pup.

More Comming soon. . . .
