Everyone had settled in for the night, well, as much as six bird kids can settle in a park in the middle of a city. Blaike was listening to the evenings chatter. Theo was the only one not talking, he was dead asleep. Scott and Saturn seemed to be getting along fine. And Zemmie was talking to Kit. When her and Kit had told the gang the news, all of their eyes had lit up. They were all excited to meet the Maximum Ride. It really was hard for her to wrap her head around, especially with the headaches she'd been having. They were growing increasingly worse, and she didn't know how she'd be able to go on hiding them from the others.
At times, the pain almost felt bearable. But then, her head would feel like someone took a hammer and hit her right on the top of her head, causing it to split into two. Were they as bad for Kit as they were for her? She looked over at him and he was staring up into the sky.
"Thanks for coming back for me by the way." She whispered to him. "It was really brave."
She saw a smile caress the red headed boy's lips. "No problem Commander. Goodnight."
"Goodnight." She mumbled back a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She lay down on her back, staring up at the night's sky. Tomorrow was a new day. A day full of promise and hope. Blaike had never been so sure of anything in her life as sure as she was of tomorrow.
She'd had a restless night. Nearly no sleep at all. Her head was pounding, and she felt as if her heart beat was on a loud speaker for the entire world to hear it. Her eyes fluttered open and she saw the morning sunshine. She quickly clamped her eyes shut, it was far too bright to look at. She heard heavy breathing, and thought it was her own at first. She forced her eyes open and turned to see Kit fidgeting in his sleep with his hair plastered to his forehead in a cold sweat. She got up quickly and crawled on her knees over to him, shaking his shoulders to wake him, fighting her own aches and pains.
"Kit! Kit come on wake up, it's only a dream. Kit?" But was it? Was it all a dream?
The boys wild green eyes flashed open and he grabbed Blaike's wrist cruelly. He looked frightened, more frightened than Blaike had ever seen him. A look of realization came across his face and he let go of his iron tight grip and scrambled away from her muttering an apology. She held her wrist in her hand. If he'd squeezed any tighter he could have snapped her wrist! What was going on with him. She looked up and stared at the back of the boys head. He turned and locked eyes with her. All his eyes said was I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.
He looked down kicking his shoe into the dirt. "We should get moving..." His voice grew softer towards the end of his sentence. She stood and woke the others, plastering her smile on her face.
"Could we start finding actual beds to sleep in please?" Zemmie muttered getting up to stretch. "The ground is really not working out for me."
"Well you're lucky you have the ground to sleep on rather than those cages." Theo snapped as he stood up popping his back.
Zemmie laughed. "Well of course silly."
Saturn jumped up with her wide eyes full of hope. "Are we really going to find Max?" She asked jumping up and down.
Blaike nodded with a smile as she looked at Kit. He wasn't participating in any of the excitement. Suddenly, she got another splitting headache. Her hand flew up to her forehead, and she stumbled a bit. Scott, who was standing beside her put his hands to her arms to keep her steady. "You okay?" He asked in his deep, quiet voice. Blaike simply nodded and said thank you. She snapped out her long sleek black hawk wings.
"Let's go." She was the first into the air. She looked down to see the others following closely. Zemmie was giggling as she did swoops and turns in the air, Saturn and Scott were always together, Scott was always quiet, and it looked as if Saturn brought out the best in him. Theo, with his glorious wing span was flying alone, as usual. Kit, was still quiet, but he looked as if the mornings...interesting incidents were behind him, his eyes were the normal beautiful green, and his face seemed happy. Despite the crease in his forehead, which she guessed was simply the headaches. She looked forward and fought herself to stay alert.
They'd been traveling all day, and they found a meadow that was about fifteen miles from a town. The group landed, and all decided to sleep. They had only stopped for lunch, and she could tell they were all tired.
"Ya know you guys, you never know what kind of creatures those scientists will be sending after us. I took watch the first night, but couldn't do it the second. Someone has to tonight." Theo mumbled.
"I'll take it." Kit cut in almost immediately after Theo was done talking. The boy only nodded and went to find himself to lay his head. Saturn slept with Scott underneath a tree, and Zemmie was talking to Theo, who looked rather agitated at her rambling mouth, but Blaike couldn't help but smile. She watched kit sit down, watching. She went over and sat next to him.
"Anytime you want, you can take a break and rest, I don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight anyway." He laughed.
"Looks like we're gonna be watch buddies eh, Commander? Only two night's of this and I already am afraid to close my eyes."
She nodded. "I know how you feel." They sat in silence for a moment.
"Amazing isn't it?" Kit said.
"What?"
"The night's sky. I've never gotten a good look at it until now. Breathtaking." He said.
Blaike looked up, her long blonde hair falling out of her face. "Yea, it really is."
Something shot across a sky and her and Kit's eyes lit up.
"A shooting star!" Kit expressed. "Make a wish!"
Blaike laughed, "What?"
"If you see a shooting star you're supposed to make a wish, and it'll come true."
"Where did you hear such a silly thing?"
He shrugged. "I think I read it once, but come on. Close your eyes and make a wish." She did, but she wouldn't even admit to herself what she just wished. She opened her eyes again to see Kit smiling at her.
"What did you wish for?" She asked him.
He shook his head and held up his hands as if she'd just trespassed into private territory. "That, my dear Commander, is in the fine print. No telling."
She laughed, "Okay." She turned back up to the sky.
There was a commotion going on behind them, the others were waking, even though it was in the middle of the night. Scott looked really angry and Saturn looked discouraged.
Her and Kit moved as one as they stood. "What's going on?" She asked.
Theo rolled his eyes. "Scotty over here is mad because he claims since I'm an outcast and so his he that we have to be friends, I told him I wasn't looking for friends, and I didn't seem myself as an outcast. It's obviously hit a spot with him no biggy."
Scott butted in. "Look, I have no one alright?"
"That isn't true." Blaike started. "You have all of us."
"Really?" Scott snapped. "You and Kit are always together getting all lovey dovey and such, Saturn is friends with everyone, and she usually keeps herself happy anyways, and Theo is starting to talk to Zemmie more."
"Correction." Theo butted in, "Zemmie is talking to me more." Instead of looking like she'd been insulted, Zemmie just smiled.
Blaike was starting to get irritated. Since when had she and Kit been 'lovey dovey'? They didn't have that kind of relationship, and she could tell Kit was agitated also.
"Look you guys, we have been away from the school for merely a few days. This is our first chance to actually speak freely and get to know each other, let's not ruin it by having petty arguments all the time." Blaike said, her brain pounding.
They all seemed satisfied with her explanation and they all sort of dispersed. She walked over and sat by herself, and Kit followed her.
"My head is pounding hard enough without all of that." He muttered bringing his fingers to his temples.
Blaike smiled, "Get some sleep things will look brighter in the morning, and I promise I'll wake you with any signs of a bad dream."
He put a hand on her shoulder. "Thanks Commander, you're an angel you know that?" And with that, he lay down and went to sleep.
Angel? She smiled. If only that were true, angels were sitting pretty up in heaven. While she was down here dealing with her crap on top of others. But, at the same time, she didn't mind it. As long as she could take some sort of pain away from other people, she was happy that way.
She turned her eyes back to Kit and his mouth was in a silent scream. She could see him shivering and she quickly shook him awake again. "Kit, wake up! It's okay!"
He jumped up ready to punch the crap out of whatever had just awoken him. He stopped and said, "Thanks...I just wish I could actually get some sleep." She understood completely and expressed it with her eyes.
"We should get a move on." She muttered as first light came, and she went to wake the others.

The group had been flying for quite sometime when they decided to stop and get something to sleep and maybe rest for the night. The group had bonded over the flight more than they ever had. The only ones who were the quietest were Blaike and Kit, because they're headaches were growing increasingly worse. Kit had come up with the plan that they should all split up to find food. Kit, Blaike, and Theo were the only ones who went by themselves. Scott and Saturn and Zemmie all went together and they were all going to meet up back at an alley they had found. Kit was making his way on the outside of restaurants, they always threw out perfectly good food for no reason. As he was looking, on the inside of a restaurant there was a TV projecting the news. He looked up at it, but it wasn't the same woman as he saw before. Sighing, he began to walk away before he heard,"And in today's top story, Maximum Ride and her friends make headline's again. Fang's blog, a popular site on the internet has been tracking the Flock's progress since it was put up. Yet yesterday a group of flying bird kids were seen in Dallas Texas, which begs the question, is this blog made by the real Fang? or is it some sort of scam? On the blog it said that they were heading North, along the Mississippi River, yet today it says they are now headed south along the same river because of the Texas Bird Kids. Are the kids from Dallas not Max and her flock but others out there? Stay Tuned."
Kit's heart leapt up into the air. He had to get back to his group and tell them the good news, this meant that if they continued flying up river, they were sure to meet up with Max!
He ran back to the alley that they had said to meet back on. He was the only one there for a few seconds when he saw Theo coming back as well as Blaike and Theo. He didn't have time to ask where Scott and Saturn were, he just had to tell them!
His eyes locked with Blaike's and he knew she could tell what he wanted to say.
"We got a clue about Max and her gang! If we keep heading up river, we'll run into them because they're coming to find us!" The three smiled up at him.
"Thank Goodness! That sure makes things a whole lot easier!" Zemmie giggled.
"Yea, it certainly does." Blaike said still smiling. Her eyes locked with Kit's and he smiled at her. This could be their chance to find somewhere they belonged! A place they fit in. And by the looks of Blaike's eyes, she knew exactly what he was thinking, and she thought the same.
He heard footsteps running behind him and he turned to see Scott and Saturn running up the alley with frightened looks on their faces, and men chasing after them. "What did you two do..." He muttered, he saw Saturn's frightened eyes and knew it wasn't their fault. "Get her out of the way!" He called to Scott, the boy nodded and Kit punched the first guy square in the face causing him to fall back into another guy. Blaike, Theo and Zemmie all jumped into the fight as well. One of them that was on Kit had a knife on him, remembering one he had as well on his belt, he pulled it out and began slashing away as blood poured out and splattered onto his face and everywhere else. Kit was feeling power flowing into his veins and that made him feel like he was on top of the world. He loved this feeling.
The last man standing was staring at him with a frightened expression. The only word on Kit's mind was Kill. Kill him! He lifted the dagger and began to leap up at the man. But he dropped his weapon and ran the other way. Kit let out a bellowed laugh, a twisted, and menacing laugh. His eyes were washed red and he thirsted for more blood, that's all he wanted. His headache had grown into a splintering thunder that seemed to shake his entire body as he thirsted to kill, to attack. He turned and the first person he layed his eyes on, was Blaike. He watched her back against the wall and her fear only channeled his need to attack more. Theo jumped in front of him willing him to stop but Kit threw Theo to the ground and continued pressing closer to Blaike. Her eyes were filled with fear as he grew closer.
"Kit this isn't you...please." She whispered to him. But he just let out a deep growl and leapt up to her, she dodged out of the way and ran up towards the alley. He crashed against the wall and let out a laugh, the chase thrilled him. He charged after her releasing his wings. His anger and power was increasing as he watched her run away. Then like lightening, he was forced to stop, which made him fall to the ground. His mind snapped out of it and he looked up to see Blaike go around the corner. He looked down at his hands and they were covered in crimson blood. The realization of what he had just done hit him in the face like a brick. He had just tried to kill his best friend, what else could have happened. He couldn't go and tell her he was sorry...He couldn't. He stood on shaky legs and his head began pounding.
Theo had raced over to him ready to strike but Kit's eyes revealed that it was over. Theo tried to help him but Kit shook his head. He was devastated by what he had done. He still couldn't believe it.
He walked over and looked at the blood pools all over the alley and he felt himself shake. He was a killer. A murderer. He took lives. All these thoughts began going through his mind and he couldn't be there anymore he had to get away. He turned to Theo. "Find Max, get them out of here, just, just please leave me alone." He took off on a run and jumped into the air. He pumped his wings as fast as he could and he landed on a nearby skyscraper. Blaike wouldn't be able to even look at him again without wondering if he'd attack her again. He was better off, and so were they, if he just steered clear of them all. He was a monster. A winged demon. And that's all he'd ever be. He began sobbing as his thoughts consumed him. What was he to do now? He deserved to die, that was for sure. He saw something flying towards him in the distance. It was Blaike. His heart cringed as she landed a few feet away from him. What was he going to say? What should he do? He had no idea...
They sat in silence for quite sometime. Neither of them speaking, or really even breathing for that matter. Kit's head was doubly pounding and he nearly couldn't take it. Was Blaike going to tell him to go away and never come back? Was she going to hate him? Did she already? He put his head in his knees as a hot tear rolled off of his cheek. This wasn't him, he was stronger than this. How could he be so afraid to talk to Blaike? His best friend. The one he trusted more than anything else in this world. He looked up and over at Blaike. Her long blonde hair was covering her face as she stared off into the distance. Her hair always did that. Hiding her face when she didn't want anyone to see the pain and the hurt in her eyes. "Blaike I.." he started and his voice sounded awkward in the silence. Like it didn't belong there. His eyes clouded with tears. "Blaike, can you ever forgive me?" He murmured. When she didn't answer right away that hurt him, what did he expect anyway? Her to smile at him and just say 'Yea! Of course! Now lets go and pretend like nothing happened?' He sighed softly to himself. He had moved a little closer and when she looked up to see him, he could tell she was a little startled that he had moved closer. She pushed the hair out of her face, her beautiful brown eyes were shaking with tears and she looked forward.
"I forgive you Kit, of course I do. I forgave you the moment you did it." He felt his heart quicken, she was forgiving him! "I can't deny though, that you scared the crap out of me." His heart sunk again. He felt completely horrible about what he did. But before he could open his mouth her face snapped up to him and she blurted out, "You can't leave us! You can't leave me! You should know by now that I can't go on without you Kit, you are always there to keep the peace and you keep me in line, you know what I'm thinking and what I want to say just by looking at me! I wouldn't be able to lead without you. I'm not even sure I lead right at all, I don't even understand why I am the leader, and that's why I need you. Because you help me to realize what I'm doing, we've been together for forever, we have the most awkwardly perfect relationship. You're my best friend and there's no way I could do this without you." She looked forward again and Kit had no idea what to say. He'd never seen her like this, ever, and he really didn't know what to do. He could always tell what moods she was in and what she really thought with her eyes, but he'd never seen her actually put her inner most thoughts out there, she was always so incredibly strong and level headed. Her actually opening up to him made him feel like their relationship was growing that much stronger. "I can't make you stay Kit, but I sure can try." She whispered quietly still looking out over the city.
His heart leapt with joy despite the circumstances. She had forgiven him, and she sincerely meant it. He couldn't help the small chuckle that surpassed his lips. Tears were streaking her perfect face and he grasped her small hand in his only to see her head whirl in surprise. But before she could respond, or even punch him, he pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her. He pushed his cheek to the side of her head and he responded, "With one simple word you could have made me stay." He said softly, "All you had to say was, stay. I'm like a little puppy that way." He laughed softly. "Thank you Blaike."
Her nickname didn't seem appropriate at this time. He was waiting for her to just push him away and tell him to get lost, because this was way to sentimental for her. But she never did, all she whispered was, "So does that mean you'll stay?" Her voice shook as if she was nervous, but there was a sense of security in her voice, as if she was safe. He leaned away from her slowly, keeping his arms around her so he could look at her face. "Of course Commander, I couldn't leave your side if I tried. You're my best friend." He paused for a moment, "I promise you, I'll never let anything like that happen again." He kissed her forehead tenderly before pulling away completely.
Blaike was now smiling and she stood. "Guess we better get back, the others are probably wondering where we are." He nodded and stood as well.
"As you wish, Commander." And with that, the two took off, and headed back to the alley.
