"Thank you." she and rubbed her face in his fur breathing in his scent for a moment and then pulled away looking up at him. "Can I just asked you one question and you promise to answer me truthfully?" she asked him. Cali took a deep and her blue eyes were wide and glistening from crying earlier.

Flicking his ear to clear the blood off Dempsey looked at Cali as she pulled away. "Uh. Yea." He wondered what the question was. For a moment he felt like moving close to her again but dug his claws in the ground to keep himself still. He didnt like the feeling he had because he didnt know what she would say. Ignoring it now he looked at Cali hoping the question was about something else.

"Why won't you tell me?" she asked him. Cali was felt like it was something about her and it scared her that he wouldn't tell her. She played with the ground for a moment as she waited for a response.

Dempsey sighed knowing she was going to ask him. He stared at the ground for a few minutes before replying. "Because...if I tell you....it could wreck our friendship..." He stared at the ground and shook his head. "I just can't." He stood up and walked pass her and looked toward the forest, the opposite way of the humans. Dempsey sighed and stayed for a moment. " I like you Cali." He said it as he normally did. Whenever they just hung out and joked around, but the last part was quieter. "I think...more then a bestfriend, and I don't want to mess it up." He hoped she hadn't heard but he turned anyway and began walking toward the forest.

Cali stared after him unsure of what to do. She didn't know what to feel or think or say or anything and her head was spinning. 'This wasn't suppose to happen. He's my bestfriend and I don't know what to do.' she thought her eyes wide. A few moments passed and then she caught up with him "Nothing could ruin our friendship and it's beyond me why you would fall for me but I don't know what I feel for you. I mean I love you, you're my bestfriend but I don't know if there's anything more right now and I'm sorry because you deserve somebody way better who doesn't have tot hink about their feelings for you." she said.

Dempsey looked at the ground as Cali talked. "I dont know what to think either. I mean for all I know I just might be going through a phase." He tried to joke but he just couldnt laugh right now. "I mean. One day I just start to feel something weird when Im near you, but I have no idea if it means I like you. I just went with instints." He looked up at Cali for a moment then turned his head as he kept walking. "I mean your my best friend and all, and I dont want to mess it up." Dempsey felt his ear sting again but he ignored it and kept walking. "Thats why I flinched when you came near me or moved away and didnt look at you in the eyes. I was afraid..."

"Dempsey," she said and put her blonde body infront of his to stop his movement. "Nothing could ever, ever take you away from me. You're my whole heart and all I need in the world and I wish I could say I felt the same way but I can't." Sighing Cali started talking again "When sh-Azura died my whole world was ripped from me. I didn't think I would ever be the same and in many ways I'm not. I can't let myself get closer to you than I already am because I'm scared to death of loosing you already. If something happens to you I don't know what I'll do and if we were together I think it would just make it worse." she said but a little voice said 'Or maybe not being with will be worse since you'll never know what could have been.'

Dempsey nodded and reliezed she said Azura. "You said her name..." He looked at Cali and wondered why she changed her mind when speaking of her mother. He didnt really want to talk about them right now so he changed the subject to Cali's mother.

"Yeah. I've been thinking alot about what you said and I think maybe if I actually use her name it'll be some sort of closer. I don't know it still really hurts and I'm just trying to find a way to lessen the blow." she told him. It had been a year and she still cried about it sometimes when nobody is around. 'Maybe if you weren't dealing with it all alone it'd be better.' the little voice said.

Dempsey nodded and wanted to help her by stroking her back with his tail but it felt weird right now so he just stayed where he was. "Well at least your feeling more comfortable with saying her name. I mean just yesterday you would probably dodge any talk about her." He smiled alittle but turned his head and walked again letting his paws take him where they wanted to go.
