ic: Emmaline wiped angry tears from her eyes. She was tired of her dad's crap! Where had her real dad gone? Well, she knew he stormed off to the lab this morning, but she didn't know why he'd changed so much. She thought of today's argument.

Emmaline pushed a slice of pancake across her plate. She sat across from her father at the breakfast table. Her mother went about, rushing to get to work. "Bye!" she sang quickly, slamming the door before a response could be elicited. Emma rolled the piece in syrup, thendecided she was no longer hungry. She glanced up at her father nervously, opening her mouth to speak, then closing it again. She always had to pick her words carefully. "Mum's got to tell her patient that he has Lupus today." She started, folding her hands in her lap. Herfather merely nodded, stabbing his fork into another large portion. Emma paused to allow him to reply. He didn't. "What are you doing at work today?" He paused. Her heart quickened. Would he give her some hint? What did her father do all day?

"Go to your room." He stated quietly. Emma waited. He repeated again, louder.

"Why? Is it important?" Emma tried to get some response.

"It is damn important, now go to your room Emmaline!" He shouted. Emma left her plate on the table and went upstairs quietly.

Now, after her father had left, she decided to break into his study. It wasn't a hard feat. She had plenty of bobby pins, and knew the basics of a lock. She twisted the pin carefully, putting an ear next to the metal lock. It was very cold. After quite a few jiggles, she managed to hear a click. The knob turned, and her heart began to race once more.

Her father's study was nothing spectacular. It had a single desk, with a few files on it. A big computer. Plenty of book cases. And for some reason, papers scattered all over the floor. Emma glanced at the papers on the floor, but they were all words, and didn't seem of much importance. Stepping over them carefully, she sat at the big desk. Moving the mouse, the computer lit bright blue, demanding a password. She tried her name. Access denied. She tried her birthday. Access denied. She tried a few more things, but they didn't work. After all, she didn't know her father well anymore. All of a sudden, the computer shut down.

Emma gasped. Did she break it? Oh no. She was so dead.

Since she was already caught, she glanced at the files on the desk. She grabbed the huge one and held it tight, looking for anything else that she might want. She stood quickly, tripping and dropping the folder. Papers went everywhere, and she scrambled to catch them. Once she was satisfied that she collected all of the ones she dropped, and a few more, she spotted a little box. It was in a glass cabinet with a folder that had the current date on it. Emmaline looked around for something to break the glass with. Maybe she could make it look like a break-in anyways. She found nothing, so she put down her current folder, and grabbed hold of the side of the stand. Shoving it over with all of her strength, the glass shattered everywhere. She kicked away some glass, and collected the treasure. Almost satisfied, she tried to break the window, but to no avail. Instead, she simply left it open.

Emma made sure to lock the door before she left the study, but then was overwhelmed with confusion. She didn't hear the careful hum of any electricity in the house. It concerned her. There had to be a computer for both her mum and dad to do their work. Oh no.

After spending some time trying to fix the box in the basement, she decided it was no use. A line must have gone down. What to do next? Well, she probably wouldn't be home if someone broke so much glass in the study, so Emma decided to go get some breakfast. She packed the stolen items in her pink backpack, and threw some overnight stuff on top just in case she needed to hide them. Stepping out of her house, Emma looked around. And she caught sight of a boy taking her neighbor's bike! "Hey!" She shouted at him. "That's not yours!"

ooc; not sure if that was Tyler... whelp. 'ere goes nothin'.

ic;
In surprise, he stops, staring. "Me?" he questions, pointing to himself with a dumb expression. Dismounting from the bike, he brings his cane to the ground again as he leans heavily upon it. It falls to the ground with a large crash. He looks up and down the street and sighs, running a hand through his hair. I do not have time for dealing with kids. Tyler frowns uneasily as he looks up and down the street warily. Taking a deep breath, he says, "Stealing bikes - it's all the rage." His voice is monotone and he leans down to pick up the bike. Wheeling it beside him, he walks up to the girl, easily towering over her. He resists saying something else - he knows it will sound childish and extremely... sassy, for lack of a better word. Picking his words carefully, he opens and closes his mouth several times before choosing what to say. "Survival of the fittest." That sounded extremely, intelligent, Tyler. Congratulations. You've moved a step down the Idiot Ladder, back into Moron Ville. Inwardly he scolds himself as he looks over her shoulder and around, setting his sights on a brick house. Go. Slam your face on it. You can't get any stupider.

ooc: it was! :D

ic: Emma watched as the boy pointed to himself. Who else would it be? Did he see anyone else stealing a bike? But when she saw the boy take a cane and put it on the ground, her opinion of him was muddled. He looked around, and she frowned. This boy looked familiar somehow. Like a cousin at a reunion, or in the back of the hallways at school. He picked up the bike again, and she became angry. Who the hell did he think he was? She slung her backpack over one shoulder and crossed her arms, glaring up at him. The boy opened and closed his mouth a few times, and she felt the beginnings of a smile play at the corner of her mouth. "Survival of the fittest." He finally said. She couldn't help but laugh.

Emma nodded at the cane. "Ironic." She simply stated. This boy obviously wasn't the picture of the fittest. "What do you need to survive from anyways?"

Frowning, he raises an eyebrow. Leaning on his cane for support again, the bike leans on his side. Tyler frowns at her laugh and thinks that maybe not everyone knows his story. So he purses his lips and shoves the glare off his face as he moves to walk away. "People are panicking. Cars don't work. Cell phones don't work. Nothing is working anymore. This isn't some natural power outage - everyone here has figured it out. It's probably best for you to leave here, too." Walking a few paces, he looks over his shoulder. "And I used to be the fittest, you know." As he turns his head, he scowls and limps away. His right leg is pricking with pain but he keeps on walking. There's no where else for him to go.

Emma felt a prick in her stomach as he glared at her. What was his problem? Stealing a bike, then making her out as the bad guy. "People are panicking... Cell phones don't work... best for you to leave here, too." Cell phones didn't work? Emma checked her pocket and sure enough, her phone wouldn't turn on. And she charged her phone every night. Emma pondered on leaving. Yes. This was Boston. It'd get bad there first. Then he said he used to be the fittest, and she was reminded how unfit he was. What if someone had stolen his transportation? She realized that she judged too quickly, but didn't want to look stupid. And he looked like he needed her help. Especially as she saw pain rake his face as he kept walking.

"Oh, hold on." She rolled her eyes, going back inside. She went to the medicine cabinet, running her arm along the bottles and knocking them all into her open bag. Looking through, she took one out and zipped the bag back up. She also grabbed a knife from the counter, secretly hoping that she'd be on a great adventure like the heroines in her books. She left out the back door, grabbing her own bike and walking it around to the front. She handed him the bottle: tylenol laced with codeine. She also nodded for him to pick up the bike that he'd already stolen. "They won't miss it anyways." She grinned.

Taking the bottle, he raises an eyebrow and stops momentarily, opening the bottle and taking three pills dry. He closes it again and hastily unzips the side pocket of his backpack, stuffing the bottle in before zipping it up again. "Thank you." Pausing for a second, he stares at her dumbly before extending his hand for her to shake. "Tyler Adams. Uh, alum from the highschool down the street -" and he pauses for a second because he hasn't spoken of the school like that in years and it's so familiar on his tongue that he thinks in the back of his mind that he never really did escape the past - "and student at Boston College." Pausing awkwardly again, he nods. "And - yes. Well, uh... Nice to meet you, I suppose." He curses himself internally because he never was good at meeting people and he still hasn't refined the skill. He thinks back to how she laughed at his comment and does not let his face show how confused he is. He thinks to how he isn't exactly unfit - or maybe he is. Maybe he goes to the gym and builds muscles only to be considered crazy - a fool - because he will never be the same. He shrugs it off and offers a sheepish smile.

Emma smiled when he mentioned the high school. "Now I remember you!" she exclaimed, "We took chemistry together!" She didn't mention that she was a cheerleader, and at the game that he got injured. Though she remembered very well. Her thoughts were interrupted when he spoke again. "Well, you're not just leaving me here." She scoffed. She had to look after him. He was obviously too ****y to know when he reached his limits. And she wasn't going to have that on her conscience. Besides, there was no way she wanted to see her dad. And her mum had become rather silent as of late. It's not like they could call her home anyways. She was finally free.

Raising an eyebrow, he nods slowly and takes a deep breath. "Yeah. I, uh, sorta choose to forget high school." Staring forward, he looks down at her again to add, "Also, I, uh, sort of introduced myself so you could, too. It's not really, you know, well. Yes." Shutting his mouth, he stares forwards and averts the probing gazes of people in their houses. Mounting the bike, he gestures for her to do the same. Like before, he places the cane across the handle bars and carefully puts his right foot on the pedal. He thinks to himself that, maybe, identities are no longer important and will become irrelevent soon enough. He does not voice his thoughts, however, and waits for her to properly introduce herself before they start off. He doesn't really know where to go, but assumes they will find their way soon enough.

"Oh," She mumbled, apologetic. She was going to follow a stranger to god knows where. And he was a thief. And wasn't the fittest. Would it be wise to tell him her name at all? It didn't matter. She could leave if he became inconvenient. "I'm Emmaline Amber. And that's my house." She nodded at it. She felt odd just leaving. It was past noon, when would she be back? Would she come back? Her father obviously wouldn't miss her, but her mother would be worried. And the hospital would be busy. Emma's eyes lingered on her front door, still open. "You sure it's best to leave?" she whispered carefully. She wasn't used to not being cared for. Sure, she was capable of it, but her parents had always provided what she needed to survive. Could she really survive by herself?

Trisha stayed close to Max and Joanna as they ducked through the streets of the city. They tended to stay on the outskirts of the buildings and near cars with no one around. Trisha really didn't want to go back to her house, but she knew with everything going on, her parents would start to worry. "Guys," she said quickly, "We should be getting back to our houses. This place is getting crazy, fast and I can't see a rational explanation why. You guys can come over to my place, or go home on your own, but I think it's safer if we stick together for now. This place is going to heck in a hand basket."
