Her and Kit made it back to the alley and everyone gave Kit anxious glares. Namely Theo. But with the warm look that Blaike sent to all of them that seemed to say, "It's okay, everything is back to normal now." They all calmed down.
"Alright you guys!" Blaike started, her headache stinging her eyes. "We're really close to finding Max and her group, it's passed mid morning so we have all day to look for her. So let's get a move on!" Everyone looked satisfied. Except Theo, of course.
"What is it Theo?" Blaike asked him calmly.
"I'm just tired of playing baby sitter all the time when 'mommy and daddy' have to go sort out their marriage problems." Kit gave him an angry and disapproving glance, and Blaike felt her own anger rise. Mommy and Daddy? Marriage? It took all of her not to punch Theo square in the face.
"Okay the Theo, how about next time I have to leave the group in the hands of someone, I'll pick Saturn so you can have a thirteen year old telling you what to do. How about that?" Blaike said mustering up a smile.
"It's bad enough coming from a seventeen year old." He murmured, but his eyes said he was done arguing.
So despite the fact that they knew people would see them, they all took off from the street and began heading north. She heard the oo-ing and the ah-ing and she sighed. People were so easily amused. And she hated for attention.
Flying gave Blaike plenty of time to think. About anything and everything really. But at this particular moment, she was thinking about herself, and how the others relied on her. Even Theo who was two years older than she was. But, ever since she could remember she'd been the core of their group. She didn't really understand it, but it didn't make it any less true. But could she really call herself a leader? The way Max called herself one?
She looked back at her group, they were all so perfectly different. Saturn was the youngest, yet she was strong and determined. Scott was the awkward, quiet one, but he was just as much a part of them as the next one. Zemmie was the fun part of the group, the one who showed everyone that there's always a reason to be happy, even in the darkest of times. Theo, the tough guy, the one who kept everyone on their toes. And frankly just told it how it was. He was like Superman, you don't expect him to ever get hurt. And then there was Kit. The one who helped her with all her decision making. They were best friends, and they could have full conversations with one another with simply their eyes, they'd been together since before she could remember, there was never a moment when he wasn't by her side. She trusted him with her entire life.
"Blaike! Look!" Kit's voice broke into her thoughts, and she looked to where he was pointing. She could just make out six tiny dots heading there way. Max! It had to be! Blaike let out a joyful laugh.
"Come on guys!" She called out and her and her gang pumped their wings harder. The gap between the two flocks closed easily. They all halted in mid air, staring. Max was eying all of them with intensity, and distrusting eyes. The boy with black hair and jet black wings, much like her own, stared at them with the same distrusting eyes. There was one boy who didn't seem to have proper pupils, but he still stared at them all with pinpoint precision. The three younger kids were fluttering in the back. A young boy with pale blonde hair was staring at them through eyes that were more curious rather than hostile. The tan colored girl seemed to be squirming with excitement, and finally the youngest girl seemed at ease, and very calm. Her eyes rested on Blaike, and they narrowed. Then her eyes moved to Kit and they remained narrowed. She moved over to Max and held her hand, looking up at her. Max nodded and pointed to the ground. Max's flock seemed to move as one and Blaike was envious for a moment. Kit gave her a glance and shrugged. Blaike also shrugged and led her own group after Max.
They all landed and stood on opposite sides of each other. Max was still eyeing all of them, and when her eyes rested on Blaike, it took every ounce of her not to shrink away. Blaike cleared her throat and spoke up. "My name is Blaike," She said in a strong voice, "And this is Kit, Theo, Zemmie, Scott and Saturn." She pointed to each as she said there names and her eyes locked with Max's once again.
Max glanced at each kid opposite of her group and turned to her own group. "This is Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel." Her voice was as strong and level as Blaike's as she pointed to each of her group.
Fang was eyeing them dangerously when Nudge burst out with, "I can't believe we actually found you guys!" Max and Fang turned hard on her and the girl shrank back, but still smiling and glowing with excitement.
"Uhm," Kit started and Max and Fang turned their heads back to them. "We've been looking for you guys." When Max's and Fang's eyes darkened, Blaike was nearly worried for Kit's safety. "We were made at the school, like you guys," He continued. "Not more than a few days ago we managed to escape ourselves. And we'd heard through the grape vine about others who had escaped and we knew it had to be you guys! We weren't even planning on looking for you, but we came into a big city and saw you guys' press conference. We heard which way you were headed and decided to go as well. Obviously we're not exactly like you, we were made before you guys, we figured that's why we'd never seen each other. They were testing different kinds of wings on us, as you can see my wings are a bit..."
"Exaggerated?" Fang put in.
"Flamboyant?" Max jeered as well.
Kit's face lit up like a light a red light bulb and Blaike felt anger coursing through her veins. "I was going for different, but I guess that works too..." He muttered.
Blaike's eyes turned on Max. "Look, if you guys really don't want us, guess what? That's all fine and dandy! I could honestly care less. Yea, we were looking for you guys because we thought, maybe, just maybe, you guys would actually care, that maybe we wouldn't feel like such freaks, and outcasts. Yes, his wings are different, but who the heck cares? We all went through the torture you guys went through, we know what the school is like, we are like you, we may look different, but we're the same things. So how about you chill out on the whole making fun of us stuff, because have you not noticed yourselves? You're the same as we are, so if you could stop? That'd be great, thanks." Blaike's head was pounding horrifically. She almost couldn't maintain her balance with the growing intensity of pain, it seemed to get worse the angrier she got.
"You've got some guts there Blaike, standing up for your group like that." Max said, and Fang looked shocked. The two looked at each other and they seemed to convey a message with their eyes. Just like her and Kit. Max turned back to them. "You'll have to forgive us. We've been avoiding sketchy looking characters for awhile now. It's an old habit that dies hard." She shrugged her shoulders, "Let's make camp here for tonight, there are plenty of trees and it's getting dark."
Blaike could hardly believe her ears. Was this all really happening? She felt Kit's hand brush the back of hers in thanks for sticking up for him. She gave him a look that said, 'You guys are everything I have, I'm not letting some snot nosed girl push you guys around.' Kit smiled at her and turned as Nudge, Gasman, and Iggy raced over and began asking questions to everyone. One of them asked Kit, "How old are you?"
"Seventeen." He replied.
And the one called Iggy's mouth dropped. "Seventeen?! Max is the oldest in our group and she's only fourteen!" Blaike looked over at her in amazement. Fourteen? Max was looking away, not in an embarrassed way, more annoyed of the fact the attention had been put on her.
This was going to be a long night.
The groups mingled a bit, but Max and Fang seemed to stay clear of any conversation. "Max! Theo here? He's nineteen!" Max gave Nudge a look that said, 'Woopdey Doo.'
Blaike honestly couldn't stand the way Max was acting. What kind of a leader was she? Not that Blaike was judging her, it was the simple fact that Max didn't seem to care about them whatsoever, which sort of stung Blaike.
Fang and Kit had made a fire and Blaike walked over to sit nest to Kit. Her heart was honestly breaking. Why? She wished she knew. Then it hit her and she turned to stare at Max. She was sitting with her back to a tree, with the little girl that was named Angel, who hadn't spoken all night. Blaike couldn't help but be envious, Max had it all put together, and Max obviously knew what she was doing. Blaike could only hope her group could be like that one day. 'Don't worry, you're group looks up to you more than you think, especially Kit. You're very important to all of them, as important as Max is to us, once you've lived together for a while, it'll become more noticeable.' A small voice came into Blaike's head, and she was startled for a moment. It obviously wasn't her own thoughts, but it sounded like a little girl. Her eyes locked with Angel's, and a silent thought passed between them when the girl smiled a bit. Blaike turned back to the fire thinking.
Kit turned to her and Blaike locked eyes with him, his eyes said, 'Isn't this a dream come true.' His sarcastic expression continued to stare at Blaike before he turned back to the fire. Fang was staring at the two of them with narrowed eyes.
"Look here Miss Max." Blaike heard Theo, and she sighed. "Ever since we came here, all you do is stare daggers into us, Blaike and Kit have had piercing headaches since we left, and they're too afraid to tell you. Why? Because they're afraid you'll alienate us even more than you already have. And I have a random voice in my head, but I personally don't care what you have to say or think, that's why I'm the only one with the guts to tell you how it is."
"You're a strange one." Max said quietly staring at Theo.
"It comes from being betrayed." He spat.
"I should know about that."
"Really? Then why aren't you like Mr. Gloomy over there?"
As soon as Theo had said that last line, Blaike felt as if something exploded in her head. She brought her hands to her head and let out a cry of agony. She heard Kit's breathing quickened and she knew he was experiencing it as well. She turned to find the source but only manged to double over because of the pain. Suddenly thousands of red gleaming eyes appeared out of no where, and the sound of machines whirred every which way. All twelve kids were trapped. Max's gang had tried to fly away, but there were fly boys in the air as well.
"Vell, vell, vell," A scientist said stepping out of the trees and staring up at Max. "Vat do ve 'ave here. Looks like 've finally managed to capture you Max." The man said in evil delight.
Blaike felt a hand grip her shoulder, and Kit was helping her up putting her behind him as if to shield her from everything. Her vision was hazy, and she felt like she could crumbled into the ground in an instant. "Looks like our leetle tracking devices verked vonderfally." The man stepped closer to Kit and Blaike, and Kit pushed his back against Blaike, still trying to shield her. "No vonder you von't attack, you can hardly see me ya?" He laughed. "Those leetle machines are excellent, but they do indeed cause nasty headache's, nightmares, and pain. Zey track you vereever you are." He laughed menacingly.
The two flocks other than Kit and Blaike were trying to fight. "Stop it!" Blaike called out. "You'll get yourselves killed!" She could barely see them, but she did make out Max's nod. Blaike turned to the scientist. Her eyes squinting and her head felt like it was about to rip open. "What do you want from us?" She asked quietly.
"Vhat I vant from you is none of your beesinuss. Take zem away."
